Pick 3: I almost timed out with this pick, and I think I should've taken Moonglove Extract. Thus far I had a White/Blue card and a Red card that was easy to splash, so I should've waited a little longer to see how things would develop instead of picking another Red card.
Pick 16: Being almost Mono Red, we're facing a tough choice, as we have no Red card and no clear card in another color that would push us in that direction. Looking at what I have, I find a couple of Green cards and a Black card. I dismissed Plover Knights because it costs two White, so it was down to Dreamspoiler Witches and Changeling Hero. I think Witches are better, and I already have a Black card.
Pick 17: How awkward, no Red or Black pick... Lowland Oaf is not a second pick. I accepted that maybe it wasn't possible to be Red/Black. After all, I only picked the Witch because I had no in-color pick, so I went back to Red/Green again, as I had no pick in-color again.
Pick 18: Again, no Red or Black. Red/Green seems to gain form.
Pick 19: Splash Eyeblight's Ending.
It became apparent that I shouldn't be in either Green or Black, but the third set of boosters, like the first ones, gave me enough Red playables. This resulted in a Mono Red deck that splashed the two best and more splashable cards: Mulldrifter and Eyeblight's Ending.
Round 1 I played against Blue/Black Faeries.
His cards were quite good, and his deck seemed very solid, but he had weak draws both games. In one he mulliganed on the play, and in both he missed a land drop in one of the early turns. Unfortunately for me, my turn 3 Mulldrifter was countered, but my draws were good enough to win against an opponent fightning against his own deck.
Round 2 I played against Blue/White Merfolk.
Game 1 I mulliganed and kept 3 Mountains, 2 Lowland Oafs, and Eyeblight's Ending. I should have mulliganed to five, as this hand can't beat anything. By turn 5 I actually had both Giants in play, but they were facing Judge, Aquitects, Fallowsage, and Angler.
Game 2 I stalled on lands for one or two turns, which gave him a head start in mounting his defenses. Merfolk aren't exactly fast at applying beats, so I recovered, but he just had a perfect game, much better than the first one.
Basically, it felt the same as round 1, but from the other side of the table.
See you tomorrow!
