[Editor's Note - Tiago accidentally sent this draft without a final decklist. He's currently in Malaysia, and thus isn't in a position the send me the details. Hopefully the actual draft process is enough until Tiago returns... I'll post the final decklist as soon as I get it. - Craig.]
Pick 3: I had two very good Black cards as my first picks, and I don't like mixing it with White, but after Goldmeadow Harrier (and Surge) the difference in quality was abysmal so that I don't think I could make any other pick here.
Pick 4: Sentinel of Glen Elendra was the one most fitting with my first picks, though Smokebraider was also an option.
Pick 6: I wanted to pick Leaf Gilder, as it's one of the best Green commons, but I already had too many colors.
At the end of the first booster and in the beginning of the second I settled into Red/Black, and things were a lot cleaner from there.
Round 1 I played against Red/White Kithkin aggro.
Game 1 my opponent won the die roll, and started with Goldmeadow Harrier. He followed with Kithkin Greathart, Avian Changeling, Changeling Berserker, and Hillcomber Giant. I missed two land drops on my fourth and fifth turn, which prevented me playing Marsh Flitter and Dreamspoiler Witches early. I stabilized at three life. I was about to turn the game, but he topdecked Ashling the Pilgrim for the final damage.
Game 2 we're in the lategame, both with many lands in play and very few cards in hand. I have Skeletal Changeling, Squeaking Pie-Sneak, Lowland Oaf, and Hornet Harasser, while he only has Fire-Belly Changeling. He plays Changeling Berserker. I'm holding Eyeblight's Ending and Nameless Inversion, and I try the two-for-one by playing Inversion on his creature, but he responds with Wild Ricochet, killing my Lowland Oaf and Squeaking-Pie Sneak. Then, before the Berserker resolves, I play Eyeblight's Ending on my Hornet Harasser, as the Ending couldn't deal with the Changeling Berserker and he would only trade it for Hornet Harasser if he wanted. I think this play was okay, as I got rid of the 5/3 right away. After all these plays, I'd lost both my removal spells and three of my creatures, for his two creatures and his card, leaving us both with nothing in hand and a Skeletal Changeling for me. Then I drew four lands in a row, while he drew unknown card, Glarewielder, Ashling the Pilgrim, and Purity.
Maybe I should have saved the Eyeblight's Ending for later... that way I wouldn't lose to Ashling the Pilgrim. It would've been his Changeling Berserker facing my Hornet Harasser and Skeletal Changeling, so even if he killed the Hornet Harasser I had Skeletal Changeling to stop it. His Glarewielder would give him an attack for eight damage, but I could kill his Ashling the Pilgrim next turn and play for a little longer.
Rewinding even more, I had no need to play Nameless Inversion with Changeling Berserker on the stack. Using the removal was only as good as blocking with my Skeletal Changeling, and it couldn't attack me. I was still going to be three-for-oned this game at some point (with his Wild Ricochet). I had no need to play the removal here.
This second game was quite interesting as I had many decisions to make, and I believe I made many on autopilot, when I should've thought a little more about them. I don't know if I would've won, but it was challenging, unlike game o1 in which I had many cards in my hand but I could not choose the cards I wanted to play - I either had to play the ones I had mana for, or the ones neccessary for survival. Sometimes I win games where I think I played sloppily, but this time I can actually identify it.
I'm gonna take a break until Morningtide is released online, as triple Lorwyn drafts are becoming increasingly pointless. I'm excited to continue when the new cards arrive, so I'll see you next time on Drafting with Tiago - Lorwyn/Lorwyn/Morningtide Edition!
