Pick 3: The consecutive Streambed Aquitects seemed like a strong Blue signal, so I didn’t take the Briarhorn even though it’s obviously a much better card.
Pick 22: I think Windbrisk Heights is generally better than Kithkin Healer, but I wanted to make sure I had enough playable creatures since I wasn’t seeing any Blue cards.
Pack 3 saved me. I didn’t really have a deck until I got 11 playables in Morningtide. I made an early commitment to Blue with the two Aquitects, and that didn’t work out since the Blue wasn’t there at all after that. This deck is much slower than the usual Kithkin deck, and a little short on the actual Kithkin (which is why I played Burrenton Shield-Bearers over Black Poplar Shaman) with two Coordinated Barrage and two Zephyrnaut. I’m also not a big fan of Hillcomber Giant, but I think this is the best deck I could make in this draft.
Round 1 I played against another White deck. In the first game I had a quick draw, and I was able to cripple him with Nameless Inversion and Violet Pall on two occasions when he double blocked. Game 2 I played Zephyrnauts on turns 3 and 4, and hit Kithkin with them almost every turn, so even though I didn’t play a fourth land the game wasn’t the least bit close.
Round 2 I played against a solid Faerie deck. I won a long drawn out first game since his deck couldn’t deal with my Plover Knights effectively. I boarded in Hoarder’s Greed and Black Poplar Shaman to prepare for a war of attrition, but it never came since he mulliganed and I had a very fast draw.
I split the finals.
Until tomorrow,
Rich
