4th Pick: I wasn’t sure about this one, but I figured Thorntooth Witch is the most splashable card, and it would be good and splashable in almost any deck I end up with.
5th Pick: I wasn’t so committed to Black that I was willing to take the Sprite, which is quite mediocre in Green Black.
19th Pick: I think the Plans are underrated. They aren’t necessarily good in Green Black, but I think it’s the best Green or Black card in this pack.
31st Pick: I think Ambassador Oak is a better card, but I wanted the three-drop, and I figured I’d be able to get more powerful cards later, and the Oak might come back.
I was very happy with this deck. It’s fast, consistent, has bombs and removal. Can’t ask for much more. I should’ve played the Pack’s Disdain over Nath’s Elite, and I ended up boarding it in both rounds.
Round 1 I played against a mediocre Black Red deck. In the first game I started casting Reach of Branches every turn at a stable life total, and there was nothing he could do. In the second game I started casting Reach of Branches at 13, but this time he had double Fodder Launch and Mudbutton Torchrunner to burn me out. Game 3 I had a quick draw, with Garruk on turn 6, and he just had some 1/1s and 2/1s.
Round 2 I played against a good Rogue deck. Game 1 he had Oona’s Backguards on turns 2 and 3. I removed one of them, and kept it close despite not playing a fourth land, and him playing Rogues every turn. I lost when he had Peppersmoke for the Cloudcrown Oak that blocked his 3/3 Paperfin Rascal. Game 2 I had a fast draw with turn 3 Battlewand Oak, and a Forest and a Treefolk every turn after that. It didn’t take long before he succumbed. Game 3 he didn’t have a turn 2 Backguard, so my creatures were just bigger than his throughout and he could never mount a defense.
I split the finals.
Until tomorrow,
Rich
