Ask the Judge, 07/20/2005
Rules Tip of the Day: If the creature that damage would be redirected to is not in play when this damage would be dealt, then the damage will not be redirected and is dealt as normal.
Q: My opponent attacks with Shinen of Life's Roar and Matsu-Tribe Decoy. He holds priority, activates the decoy against my lone 2/2 bear. Under normal circumstances, I understand that two creatures with Lure abilities means that the defender can choose what to block. Does the slight variation of the abilities of these two attackers make any difference?
A: No. The creature targeted by the Decoy's ability will have two effects on it that create blocking requirements. As the controller of this permanent you get to choose which requirement to fulfill as you will be unable to comply with both. It does not matter that the lure effect of the Shinen applies to all of your creatures and the Decoy's effect is only applied the targeted one.
Q: Is it possible to redirect One with Nothing, using Rebound? If so, is it also possible to do this using the copy ability of Fork or Mischievous Quanar?
A: One with Nothing does not target anything, it causes its controller to discard his hand. So you can not change it's target and if you make a copy of a One with Nothing that you control, you'll still be the controller of the copy.
Q: Ethereal Haze says "Prevent all damage dealt by creatures this turn." Does that include damage done by removing counters from Triskelion?
A: Ethereal Haze will prevent all damage from creatures, not just combat damage Triskelion is a creature, so the damage from it's ability will be prevented.
Q: Are the cards removed by Arc-Slogger are public information? I thought that the answer was no because they are removed from the game from a non-public zone the content should be not public and the opponent should not be able to look through it. However, the head judge of the tournament said that it was public information and that the opponent could look at it.
A: The removed cards are public information and are reviewable by all players. All cards in the removed from game zone are removed face up unless the effect that removes these cards specifically states that they are removed from the game face down.
Q: Can a person activate the ability of Penance by putting a card in my hand on the top of my library even though no black or red source is doing any damage to me or my creatures?
A: Yes, you can play that ability even if there is no red or black source to choose. There is no targeting requirement, so you can pay this cost and activate this ability any time you can play spells or abilities.
Q: If I have two Plague Spitters each with Soul Link on them during my upkeep how much life would I gain?
A: It depends on the number of creatures in play. Assuming that these Plague Spitters are the only creatures in play then you'll gain 12 life, as each will deal a point to themselves, each other, each player and their second ability will trigger for each point dealt to them. You will not gain any life for the damage dealt by the Plague Spitter's leaves play triggered abilities, as the Spitters will not be enchanted by Soul Links in play.
Q: If you have lands that produce multiple mana and activate Deep Water, do the lands produce multiple blue mana or just one blue mana apiece as the wording on Deep Water implies?
A: Those abilities will only produce one blue mana. Deep Water has errata that now states that "if you tap a land you control for mana, it produces U instead of its normal type and amount." The key word being "amount."
Q: If two players on the same team paired against each other don't want to play the final round in the Swiss part of a tournament, do they need to decide if someone is going to concede or if they're gonna ID right away? Can they wait for the results of the other games (watching them and not playing their own match) to decide what they're going to do?
A: While player can choose to concede or intentionally draw at any time, they are not allowed to use outside information to determine what they are going to do. This includes finding out the results form other matches. They cannot choose to watch other matches. They must either ID, one can concede, or play it out.
