Chris Richter

Rules Tip of the Day: Unless there is a restriction on the ability, there is nothing to prevent you from blocking with a creature and then using its activated ability.

Q: I have Erayo, Soratami Ascendant in play. My opponent plays two spells, then I play two spells, so Erayo flips and becomes Erayo's Essence. My opponent then plays another spell. Erayo's Essence will not counter this new spell played by my opponent, correct?

A: You are correct, the ability of Erayo's Essence will not trigger at this point, as this spell played by your opponent is the third spell he has played that turn.

Q: If I have Ornate Kanzashi in play and then play an Epic spell such as Enduring Ideal, can I activate the Kanzashi's ability and play the spell removed this way?

A: You can only play this removed card if it is a land. If it is a non-land card then it would be a spell if you played it and the Epic effect will prevent you from playing any spells.

Q: Does Footsteps of the Goryo remember a creature which changes form during that turn? For example, if I Footsteps Nezumi Graverobber and empty my opponent's graveyard, does the Nighteyes die at end of turn? Does this change if a flip enchantment is involved?

A: Yes, it does not matter that some of the characteristics of this permanent change, it is still the same permanent and you will have to sacrifice it. This also applies to those flip cards that turn into enchantments

Q: Can my opponent use Shining Shoal to prevent and redirect damage from Hand of Cruelty back to me even though he has Protection fromWhite?

A: Yes. You can choose to redirect damage from Hand of Cruelty. This is because you choose the course of the damage you want to redirect when Shining Shoal resolves, you do not target this source. Keep in mind that Shining Shoal does target the creature or player you want to redirect the damage to, so you wouldn't be able to target the hand of Cruelty and have the Shoal redirect damage to it.

Q: How exactly does Rune-Tail, Kitsune Ascendant trigger? Is it just a triggered ability when your life rises above 30? What if the triggered ability is Stifled? Does it require a life total change to notice again?

A: When your life total goes above 30 this ability will trigger. If this ability is countered, it will trigger immediately again, unless your life total is no longer above 30. This is because Rune-Tail has a state-based trigger. This kind of triggered ability will trigger as long as the appropriate condition is met. Once it has triggered it will not trigger again until the first trigger leaves the stack. Countering this ability with Stifle doesn't really do anything.

Q: With regards to Goblin Warchief, what exactly constitutes a "goblin spell" (or a beast, zombie, soldier, or illusion). Specifically, I was wondering if Goblin Shrine was a goblin spell.

A: Goblin spells are those creature spells with the subtype Goblin. So Goblin Shrine, even though it has the word "Goblin" in its name is not a Goblin spell.

Q: I have played Shifting Sky and made all non-land permanents red. My opponent plays Cho-Manno's Blessing on his Soldier and chooses red. This doesn't remove the Cho-Manno's Blessing even though it is red, but can I then use my Crimson Acolyte to give his soldier protection from red again to destroy his Cho-Manno's Blessing?

A: Cho-Manno's Blessing will fall off and go to the graveyard in this example as it is illegally enchanting this soldier. The effect from Cho-Manno's Blessing will not remove the Blessing. This is in cases where you choose White when Cho-Manno's Blessing comes into play or, like in this situation, where the color of the Cho-Manno is changed into the chosen color. However, Cho-Manno's Blessing will fall off if the enchanted creature receives an appropriate protection ability from some other effect.

Q: Is it true that you lose life to Ivory Tower if you have less than 4 cards in your hand?

A: No (kudos to Chris for not saying "this is the silliest question ever"--Sheldon). Ivory Tower will only cause you to gain life if you have more than four cards in your hand. It will not cause you to lose life if you have less than four.
