Rules Tip of the Day: Many people refer to triggered abilities being activated when their trigger condition is met. This is not technically correct. While the end result is somewhat similar, in that the ability goes on the stack, it does not mean that it is an activated ability.
Q: I control Goblin Welder, Kataki, War's Wage, Mox Ruby in play. I also have Sundering Titan in my graveyard. At the beginning of my upkeep, I put the Mox Ruby's effect (granted by Kataki) on the stack and respond by using the Welder's ability targeting my Mox to bring back the Sundering Titan. When the Welder's ability resolves Mox goes to my graveyard and Sundering Titan comes into play. Does Sundering Titan get an ability from Kataki, War's Wage that will trigger during this upkeep?
A: It will gain the ability, but it will not trigger this turn. Kataki's ability grants each artifact in play the upkeep triggered ability. However if an artifact is not in play when its controller's upkeep begins, then this ability will not trigger. It does not matter if an artifact enters play under your control during your upkeep step.
Q: I control a Blood Clock and a bunch of 1/1 tokens created by Beacon of Creation. During my next upkeep, can I return one of them to my hand? Or do I have to choose a card, and not a token, since a token can't exist in my hand?
A: You can choose to put a token in your hand. The word "return" is there for grammatical reasons. A permanent in play does not need to have started in your hand in order to return it. And yes, you can choose to put a token in your hand, it does not have to be a permanent that is represented by a card. The token will cease to exist the next time state-based effects are checked.
Q: Can I use Broken Fall to regenerate one of my opponent's creatures?
A: Yes, you can target any creature with the ability of Broken Fall, or its more recently printed functional equivalent Molting Skin. Keep in mind that when you regenerate a creature you create a regeneration shield that will "save" this creature the next time it would be destroyed. This creature will not be affected by the effect from Broken Fall in any way until then—it won't become tapped until it actually regenerates.
Q: can I cast Goryo's Vengeance in the beginning of my upkeep, put out Seizan, Perverter of Truth, and get the draw effect for myself?
A: No. The earliest chance you would get to play Goryo's Vengeance is after the upkeep step of a turn has begun. By that time, it is too late for Seizan's ability to trigger, as it was not in play when the upkeep step began. However, you can play Goryo's Vengeance during your opponent's turn, during the end of turn step, so that Seizan will be in play when your upkeep step begins.
Q: If I play Rule of Law, then my opponent attacks with a Suntail Hawk, which he ninjitsus into Ninja of the Deep Hours, does that count as his spell for the turn?
A: No. Ninjutsu is an activated ability, it does not count as playing a spell. Your opponent will be able to play a spell yet this turn.
Q: If my equipment is tapped, can I still equip it to a creature? If it is already equipped before it is tapped, do the equipment's abilities still work?
A: There is nothing that prevents you from using the equip ability of a tapped piece of equipment. And yes, the effects from equipment attached to a creature will still be applied, even if the equipment becomes tapped.
Q: If I'm going to play Reshape to get an artifact that costs 0, can I only pay the 2 blue mana for the spell or do I have to put at least 1 into it?
A: Yes you can choose to play Reshape and choose the value of X to be 0. There is no requirement that the value of X be at least 1.
Q: If Divine Presence is in play and someone attacks me with a 25/25 creature enchanted by Spirit Link, would they still gain 25 life from the enchantment, or would the amount gained be reduced to 3 as well because of the damage replacement?
A: Because the replacement effect from the Divine Presence will change the amount of damage that this incredible large creatures deals, the controller of this creature will only gain three life when Spirit Link's triggered ability resolves.
Q: Can you have more then one copy of Mirri's Guile out at a time? If I have four copies out could I look at the top 12 cards?
A: Yes you can have more than one copy of Mirri's Guile in play at one time. However you won't be able to rearrange the top 12 cards of your library. The ability of each Mirri's Guile will trigger and resolve independently, not cumulatively and all at once. In other words you'll be able to rearrange the top three cards of your library four times.
