Rules Tip of the Day: When a permanent regenerates, it stays in play. Anything attached to this permanent, i.e. aura enchantments or equipment, will stay attached to it.
Q: If I attach Grafted Wargear to an Ashen-Skin Zubera, then move it to another creature I control, do leaves-play triggers (like Shirei, Shizo's Caretaker) recognize the Zubera's power as its default 1, or the Wargear-enhanced 4?
A: The Zubera has a power of 1 when it leaves play, as the Wargear is no longer attached to it. Because of this, Shirei's ability will trigger, and the Zubera will later be returned to play (as long as Shirei remains in play).
Q: If I use Ashes of the Fallen to make everything in my graveyard a Zubera, and then three of my creatures die, will they count towards Zubera abilities, such as Ashen-Skin Zubera's discard?
A: No. The Zubera triggered ability counts Zuberas that were in play that went to a graveyard. Ashes of the Fallen only affects cards in your graveyard. Cards that go to your graveyard from play will not be affected until they are actually in your graveyard. The game will not see them as Zuberas going to the graveyard.
Q: I have Goblin Cohort in play. I play a creature. My opponent counters the creature. Can I attack with the Goblin Cohort?
A: Yes, your Goblin Cohort can attack. You played a creature spell; it does not matter that it was countered—it was still played.
Q: Do the cards that have been removed from the game by Kaho, Minamo Historian's ability count as played spells? Specifically, will Erayo, Sorotami Ascendant's ability count them, or does Erayo only count cards that are played from your hand?
A: These cards that have been removed from the game count as spells when they are played. Erayo's ability does not care what zones these cards come from, only that they are played spells.
Q: When Orb of Dreams is in play, and my opponent uses the Ninjutsu ability, will I still take damage from the Ninja?
A: Yes. When a Ninjustu ability resolves, a Ninja is put into play tapped and attacking. Orb of Dreams will not change the fact that this Ninja is attacking.
Q: I have a question involving Sensei's Divining Top and Words of Wind. Playing the Top's ability to draw a card and in response activating Word's ability, can you return the Top itself to hand instead of drawing a card?
A: Yes. Words of Wind creates a replacement effect. When the Divining Top's ability resolves, the draw portion of that ability will be replaced by each player returning a permanent to their hand. This will occur before the second portion of the Top's ability. This means that if you return the Top to your hand, it will not be available to be placed on top of your library. So, for each two mana you have open, you can replay the top, create another Words of Wind replacement effect, and cause each other player to return a permanent they control to their hand.
Q: I am playing a rogue blue deck against Tooth and Nail. I have Temporal Adept out and I'm facing Urza's Mine and Urza's Tower. He plays Urza's Power Plant and in response I use the Adept to bounce the Mine. He claims that he can still use the 2 mana from it as playing lands doesn't use the stack. I claim that mana sources don't use the stack, but playing lands does. Who is correct?
A: He is. Playing a land does not use the stack and cannot be responded to.
Q: I have Reveille Squad out and my opponent attacks me with Seasoned Marshal. Will my Reveille Squad be tapped or untapped when we start the Declare Blockers step?
A: Because you are the defending (and therefore non-active) player, your triggered abilities will go on the stack second and resolve first. This means that creatures you control will become untapped by Reveille Squad's ability before the ability of Seasoned Marshal resolves. If he targeted your Reveille Squad with Seasoned Marshal's ability, then it will become tapped and unable to block.
Q: I control Wall of Roots, and it has four -0/-1 counters at the start of my turn. I play the Wall's "only once each turn" ability (killing it). Then I reanimate it (for example, via Zombify). Will I get to play the Wall's ability again?
A: Yes. When a card goes from one zone to another, effects that were applied to it in the first zone will lose track of it. This Wall of Roots that was put into play via Zombify is a new permanent with no connection to when this card was previously in play.
