Rules Tip of the Day: Permanents with protection from a quality cannot have enchantments or equipment attached to them that are that quality.

Q: My question concerns Concerted Effort. Even though the effect triggers at the beginning of each player's upkeep, it only applies to the creatures of the player controlling Concerted Effort, because it says "you" instead of "that player," correct?

A: You are correct. Concerted Effort does not grant any abilities to creatures that you do not control, or affect them in any other way.

Q: I want to clarify Selesnya Evangel's special ability. It states on the card, "1, T, Tap an untapped creature you control: Put a 1/1 green Saproling creature token into play." Can we pump this ability by paying two mana, and tapping Selesnya Evangel, then tapping two untapped creatures?

A: No. You are not given the option of paying more than the costs listed in order to increase the effect. When you use that ability, you tap the Evangel, tap one other creature, and pay one mana.

Q: With regards to Peel from Reality does it have to have both targets? Can I use it to remove a creature of my opponent if I don't have a creature in play, or can I use it to remove my creature if my opponent doesn't have a creature in play?

A: No to both scenarios. In order to play Peel from Reality, or any spell or ability, you must choose all of the listed targets. So in order to play Peel from Reality, you must target a creature you control and one that you do not control.

Q: I have ten creatures in my graveyard, including a Golgari Grave-Troll. I have two creatures in play. If I play Living Death, how large is the Grave-Troll? Would the Grave-Troll be the same size after a spell like Patriarch's Bidding (assuming all the creatures in my graveyard were Trolls or Skeletons)?

A: In the Living Death example, the Grave-Troll will enter play with two +1/+1 counters. This is because Living Death removes all creature cards in your graveyard from the game first, before the creatures in play are sacrificed. When the Grave-Troll enters play, there will only be two creatures card in your graveyard. Patriarch's Bidding is different, as it takes the appropriate creature cards in your graveyard and puts them directly into play. This means that the Grave-Troll's ability will count all card in your graveyard that come into play at the same time as it, including itself. If there are ten creature cards in your graveyard, including the Grave-Troll, when Patriarch's Bidding resolves, the Grave-Troll will come into play with ten +1/+1 counters.

Q: If an opponent was casting Char and targeting my Firemane Angel, in response could I use my Miren, the Moaning Well to sacrifice Firemane Angel, gaining three life, and countering his Char? Would my opponent still take 2 damage?

A: Yes, you can respond to Char by activating the ability of Miren, the Moaning Well. If you do, the Char will be countered on resolution, and no part of it will resolve. This means that your opponent will not receive 2 points of damage.

Q: My opponent has artifact lands in play, and I play Blood Moon. Artifact lands are non-basic lands, so that means all of these lands are now Mountains. Are they still artifacts?

A: Blood Moon only affects the sub-types of non-basic lands; it does not affect the types or supertypes of these lands. These lands will still be artifacts and non-basic lands. They will have the subtype of Mountain, and their only ability will be producing Red mana.

Q: If Yawgmoth Demon is already tapped at the beginning of my upkeep, can it still deal damage to me, if I do not sacrifice an artifact?

A: Yes, being tapped does not prevent the ability from triggering, resolving or dealing damage to you.

Q: Most of the Humility questions I've seen do not address the idea of an activated ability turning an object into a creature. So my question is; how does Humility interact with a Genju of the Fields as far as power and toughness are concerned? I believe that Humility is applied in layer 6b. But I can't decide where to apply the Genju's p/t ability. My first thought is that it's a Characteristic-Setting Ability, but since the Genju is modifying another object (the Plains) it can't be a CSA (from my understanding). So my next thought is that both effects will get applied in layer 6b and fall prey to the dependency rule, with the Humility being dependent on the Genju, thus making it a 1/1. Is this use of dependency correct or would it come down to timestamps? And would it be the timestamp of the Genju or the Plains?

A: The power and toughness setting portion of an animation effect is also applied in layer 6b. However there is no dependency between these two effects in this sublayer. Because of this, the power and toughness of the animated land will be determined by timestamp. The timestamp that matters is set when the animation effect resolves. Assuming that this animation ability was used after the Humility came into play, then this animated permanent will have the power and toughness set by the animation effect.
