Rules Tip of the Day: You can only replace an individual draw once by Dredging for a single card. You cannot Dredge for multiple cards at one time, unless you replace multiple card draws.
Q: I've been wondering how Pithing Needle, Suppression Field, and Ground Seal work in relation to Dredge. Does the Needle completely shut down the Dredge of a targeted card? Does Suppression Field add mana to the Dredge cost? Does Ground Seal completely shut down all Dredging?
A: None of the effects from the three listed cards affect Dredge abilities at all. Dredge is a static ability that creates a replacement effect. Because of this, Pithing Needle and Suppression Field do not affect how Dredge works. And choosing to apply the Dredge replacement effect from a card with Dredge does not target anything, so Ground Seal will not prevent this from happening.
Q: When I play Chorus of the Conclave, can I pay extra to put +1/+1 counters on it? (i.e. I pay 9 mana to make it a 4/9).
A: No. Chorus of the Conclave's ability that allows you to pay extra for creature spells is a static ability that is applied while it is in play. It is not in play when you play it, so you cannot pay any extra mana to get +1/+1 counters on it.
Q: I have Furnace of Rath in play and I attack my opponent with a Boros Swiftblade, and it is blocked by a Coalhauler Swine. I argued that the Coahauler Swine was dealt four damage (double the first strike damage and double the regular damage) and that each player was dealt eight damage, as Furnace of Rath doubled the damage from the Coalhauler Swine as well. My opponent argued that the damage was only doubled once, and so we each took four. Who was right?
A: You are. Each player will receive eight points of damage, however it will be dealt as four points of damage at two separate times, not all eight at once. When first strike combat damage resolves the Coalhauler Swine will be dealt two points of damage. This will cause the Swine's ability to trigger. When this triggered ability resolves each player will be dealt four points of damage as the effect from Furnace of Rath is applied to this event as well. This process will then repeat when the one point of normal combat damage from the Swiftblade is doubled and dealt to the Swine.
Q: If I cast Rally the Righteous on Skynight Legionnaire (or any other red/white creature) does the effect go to my Akroma, Angel of Wrath?
A: Your Akroma will receive +2/+0 and become untapped when Rally the Righteous resolves. It does not matter that Akroma has protection from red; the Radiance effect does not target, so an appropriate protection ability will not prevent this effect from being applied.
Q: If I control two creatures, one Green and one White, and a Concerted Effort, and I cast Bathe in Light, targeting the Green one and choosing "Red," will the Concerted Effort give protection from Red to my White creature or not?
A: This creature may receive protection from Red depending on when you play Bathe in Light. Concerted Effort only gives creatures you control abilities that the others have at the beginning of each upkeep. In order for all of your creatures to receive this protection ability this turn, you'll have to respond to Concerted Effort's triggered ability by playing Bathe in Light. This way one of your creatures will have protection from Red when Concerted Effort's triggered ability resolves. If a creature you control gains an ability later in the turn, it will not be shared amongst the other creatures you control.
Q: My opponent has a Platinum Angel and no cards in their library to draw from. Does the card draw still occur; for example will the ability of Underworld Dreams still trigger?
A: No. If he can not draw a card due to having an empty library, then abilities that trigger when he would draw will not trigger.
Q: If I Twincast a Traumatize, do I eliminate 3/4 of a library?
A: Yes. The first to resolve will "mill" 1/2 of the targeted player's library. The second to resolve (the original Tramautize) will then "mill" 1/2 of what remains. In the end 3/4 of this player's library will have been put into his or her graveyard.
Q: Does the Epic effect end once the spell with Epic on it is removed from the game via Withered Wretch or similar effects? (Just wondering, because if there's no spell in the graveyard for the ability to copy....)
A: No, removing the Epic card from the game after it has resolved will not negate the Epic effect or affect it in any way. A copy of the Epic spell will still be generated, as the effect is not contingent any object in the game.
Q: If a morph spell is Hindered, is the decision to put it on top or bottom of the library made before or after the card is revealed?
A: You will not be able to see what card this is until after you decide where this card will end up. When a spell is countered, it goes directly from the stack to the graveyard. Hinder's replacement effects alters this somewhat and gives you the option of changing the destination of this card. In order for this card to go to to the chosen zone, you need to make a choice while the targeted spell is still on the stack. Because you decide where you want this card to go while it is still on the stack, you will not yet know what card it is. So when Hinder resolves you'll choose where you want it to end up, remove it from the stack and reveal it, and put it on the top or bottom of its owner's library.
