Rules Tip of the Day: Tapping a land for mana does not use the stack and cannot be responded to. When a player taps a land for mana, he does not lose priority, so he can then play spells or abilities.
Q: Can I target—at the same time—two creatures with the same name with two Winnows?
A: Yes, but assuming that there are only two copies of this permanent, when the second Winnow resolves, it will not destroy the permanent it targets. However, you will still draw a card.
Q: I have Dimir Doppelganger and there is a Royal Assassin in the graveyard. I make the Doppelganger a copy of the Assassin, then I play Followed Footsteps on it. Are the tokens Doppelgangers, Royal Assassins, or Doppelgangers that are copies of Royal Assassin (allowing me to use them to copy something else if I wanted)?
A: They will be token copies of the Doppelganger copying the Assassin. This is because copy effects will duplicate other copy effects. So the tokens will have the Dimir Doppelganger ability to remove creature cards from the game and become copies of the removed card.
Q: In response to an Enduring Ideal, if I play Shadow of Doubt and the player can't search his/her library, will Enduring Ideal resolve? Will the Epic ability be played every turn?
A: Yes, the Enduring Ideal will still resolve and a copy of Enduring Ideal will go on the stack at the beginning of its controller's upkeep in each successive turn. Shadow of Doubt will prevent the controller from searching his library when the original resolves, but it has no other effect on this spell or the effect it generates.
Q: I realize that using Clone with a Legendary creature kills the creature and the Clone, but I was curious if the same held true for Followed Footsteps. Will the token and the enchanted creature kill each other? My hang-up is the fact that it's a token, I wasn't sure if that mattered.
A: Yes, both will go to the graveyard. It does not matter that this copy is a token, it is an exact copy of the original; both will be Legendary and have the same name.
Q: I use Dimir Doppelganger to copy Dimir Infiltrator. I then attack with the Doppelganger. It gets through and during the damage resolution I copy a bigger creature to do more damage. Is this possible?
A: What you want to do it possible, just not as you described. You need to turn the Doppelganger into another creature before the combat damage step. The last opportunity to do this is in the declaration of blockers step after blockers have been declared.
Q: I'm at seven life, with Platinum Angel in my graveyard. I play the Death side of Life / Death, targeting Platinum Angel. What happens? Do I lose the game because I lose the life before the Angel makes a difference, or does the Angel's ability kick in and prevent me from losing?
A: State-Based Effects are what cause you to lose the game when you have zero or less life. These effects check for their conditions each time that a player is about to recieve priority, and they do not check during the resolution of a spell or ability. So after Death finishes resolving, SBEs will be checked, the game will see that you have zero life, but Platinum Angel's ability will prevent you from losing the game.
Q: What happens if I put a Charge token, via Coretapper's ability, on a Modular creature?
A: This Modular creature will have a charge counter on it; in most cases this won't mean anything. When this Modular creature goes to the graveyard this charge counter will not be moved, as the Modular ability only moves +1/+1 counters.
Q: If I have Sorceress Queen in play and my opponent has a 1/1 creature with a bunch of Equipment on it and it's a 20/10. I play Sorrceress Queen's ability, targeting the creature. Will it become a 0/2, or will the creature become a 0/2 with Equipment making it a 19/11?
A: How this works is a somewhat recent change from how it has worked in the past. Assuming that the bonuses provided by the Equipment are static abilities, then the creature will end up being a 19/11. This is because the effects from static abilities that do not set power and toughness are applied after other effects, like the effect generated by Sorceress Queen's ability.
Q: Under the unified deck construction rules for sanctioned Two-Headed Giant, how many copies of Relentless Rats are allowed between the two decks?
A: Because an individual player can have any number of these in a single deck, a team using the unified deck construction rules can also have any number in their decks.
