Ask the Judge, 12/28/2005

Chris Richter

By Chris Richter
12/28/2005

Rules Tip of the Day: When making a copy of an object, you do not copy effects that are applied to the original.

Q: While Infernal Darkness is in play, and my opponent controls many different types of land in play (Forest, Swamp, Island, Plains), what color of mana can a Fellwar Stone produce? I think it can only generate Black, due to the Infernal Darkness effect.

A: You are correct, the Fellwar Stone will only be able to produce black mana. When determining what mana the Stone can generate, you factor in all replacement effects that would be applied top your opponent's lands.

Q: I was wondering how Nullstone Gargoyle works with Epic spell copies?

A: There is no interaction between Nullstone Gargoyle's ability and the Epic effect. The copies of Epic spells are put on the stack without being played, and Nullstone Gargoyle's ability only counters non-creature spells that are played.

Q: I play Volrath's Shapeshifter, then Clone it. The Clone dies. If there are no other creatures in play, does the Shapeshifter die as well?

A: Yes. In fact the Shapeshifter will die even if there are other creatures in play. This is because when the Shapeshifter becomes a copy of Clone, it is not coming into play, so it can't copy a creature in play.

Q: Blood Moon is in play; I tap Forbidden Orchard for mana. It produces Red mana, because it is a Mountain. Does my opponent get a token?

A: Your opponent will not get the 1/1 Spirit token. When Blood Moon makes a non-basic land into a Mountain, it removes all abilities that that land has. This includes abilities that are not mana abilities, like Forbidden Orchard's triggered ability.

Q: If I have Shirei, Shizo's Caretaker on the field and my Phantom Nishoba is sent to my graveyard from play, does Phantom Nishoba come back at the end of my turn with seven counters on it?

A: It depends on what the power and toughness of the Nishoba was when it left play. If it was one or less, then it will return to play, and it will come into play with seven counters on it. However, if the Nishoba left play with power of two or more, then it will not be returned to play by Shirei's ability.

Q: With regards to Mask of Intolerance, when it says "basic land types", does it mean four different types, or can it be the same types? I.e., if I had four Islands, would the Mask deal three damage to me during my upkeep, or would I have to control four different basic land types?

A: It means four or more different basic land types. In the example given, you will not take any damage as you only control one basic land type.

Q: Does Solitary Confinement (or its friends, Ivory Mask and True Believer), stop an opponent from playing Intuition?

A: No. Intuition does not target at all. You can still play Intuition and have an opponent choose one of the three searched for cards to be put into your hand.

Q: I play Gilded Drake and steal my opponent's creature. Then I play Brand. Does the Drake come back to for good, or do we trade creatures again?

A: When Brand resolves and you regain control of your Gilded Drake. It is not coming into play, so its ability will not trigger. In other words, you will retain control of the Drake.

Q: I played Cranial Extraction, named a card, and I removed three copies of that card from my opponent's library. I unintentionally forgot to remove a copy from his graveyard. He later played Reclaim on it, and I found out the mistake. Could I call a judge and claim that the card should have been removed because the graveyard is a public zone and when you search a public zone you have to find it if it's there? That rule would suggest that the card must be removed from the game already. Or is it my own mistake, and I have to accept it, though it wouldn't be exactly as the rules say? What's your opinion, and what are the possible rulings?

A: You are correct that this card should have been removed from the game. As long as it is provable that this card was in this graveyard when the Cranial Extraction resolved, and nothing significant has occurred since then, and this card was just overlooked, then I'd most likely give each player a warning for making a Procedural Error - Major, remove this card from the game and back up the game to just before the Reclaim was played.

However, if this card has been in this player's graveyard for several turns and if this fact impacted the game in any way other than being recently targeted by the Reclaim, then I may allow it to stand. This is because there is nothing illegal or wrong with the current game state; the illegal action took place when the Cranial Extraction resolved. If we can easily correct the game state, we do, however if the game can not be easily corrected we let the game stand as is.

[I mostly agree with Chris here. I would note, though, that in my opinion, a card being in the graveyard while a player holds a Reclaim will often be exerting an impact on the game state. I would probably lean towards leaving the card in many situations. I would, however, make it especially clear to the opponent that maintaining proper game state is his responsibility, too. -Seamus]
