Rules Tip of the Day: You cannot Dredge a card if there are not sufficient card in your library to put into your graveyard.
Q: If I have Circu, Dimir Lobotomist in play; my opponent plays a spell affecting Circu, and I play an instant which causes Circu to remove a copy of the spell targeting Circu, will Circu still be affected, or will the spell "see" that my opponent can not play that spell and hence not affect my creature?
A: Your opponent has already played this spell; Circu's ability removing another copy of the card from the game at this point will not do anything. Circu's ability prevent cards from being played. It does not affects spells on the stack that have already been played.
Q: My opponent and I are both at six life. I attack him with a 6/6 Vulturous Zombie and a 6/2 Glass Golem. He doesn't block either of them, but he casts Boros Fury-Shield, targeting my Glass Golem and spending Red mana to do so. After everything resolves, is the game a draw?
A: No, you will lose the game. Boros Fury-Shield deals damage when it resolves, if Red mana was spent to play it. It does not redirect damage; it prevents damage and deals its own.
Q: Is there an opportunity to respond to an opponent's use of the Dredge mechanic? For example, I have Sewerdreg in play, and my opponent has Stinkweed Imp and Shambling Shell in his graveyard. If he tries to Dredge one of those creatures back, can I respond by sacrificing my Sewerdreg, targeting whichever card he tried to Dredge, in order to stop him? Or do I have to sac the Sewerdreg before he actually draws, meaning that whichever card I target, he can still Dredge back the other one?
A: You cannot respond to the application of a Dredge ability. You would have to sacrifice Sewerdreg before the draw occurs. You are correct that if you do, your opponent can just choose to Dredge the other creature.
Q: Say player B plays Dream Leash on a tapped creature controlled by player A, thereby gaining control of it. Then player A plays a Confiscate on the same creature. Player B then puts another Dream Leash on the creature. What would happen if someone put a Flickerform on the creature and activated it? Who would control the creature after it comes back into play? Would it depend on who controlled the Flickerform, whose turn it is, or what order the Control Magic effects were placed on the creature?
A: The result in this situation is determined by whose turn it is. When multiple permanents enter play at the same time, the active player chooses the timestamp for each of these permanents. So the active player when this creature and these enchantments return to play can choose to have whatever control effect he controls applied last.
Q: I have a Ravenous Rats in play and my opponent attacks with Shambling Shell. May I declare my Rats as a blocker and then, in response to him playing Devouring Light, put damage on the stack?
A: No. Combat damage automatically goes on the stack at the beginning of the combat damage step. You do not advance to this step until both players have passed priority in succession without doing anything in the declaration of blockers step. You cannot put combat damage on the stack just because one player wants to.
Q: I have a Nezumi Graverobber flipped into Nighteyes, and it goes to the graveyard. Then I play Sutured Ghoul and remove this flip card from my graveyard. Do I get the power and toughness from the Graverobber or the Desecrator?
A: Sutured Ghoul's ability looks at the power and toughness of the creature cards you remove. Flip cards have the characteristics of their unflipped version whenever they are in any zone other than in play and flipped. So this Nezumi Graverobber will only raise this Sutured Ghoul's power and toughness by +2/+1.
Q: I have Arcbound Hybrid enchanted with False Demise. When it dies do I get to put its Modular counters on another artifact creature and return the Hybrid to play with more counters as if it were freshly played?
A: It will come back as a new Archbound Hybrid, so it'll come into play with a new complement of two +1/+1 counters.
Q: Jungle Patrol creates Plant Wall tokens that can be sacrificed for Red mana. Could I also sacrifice a Plant (like Utopia Tree) or a Wall (like Vine Trellis) to Jungle Patrol for an extra Red mana after tapping them?
A: No, you have to sacrifice a creature that has the subtypes of both Plant and Wall in order to activate Jungle Patrol's ability.
Q: Just how does one play with Firestorm Phoenix in a tourney? It seams to imply that you'd have to do something like leave it revealed in your hand until the end of turn.
A: As a practical matter, I think what you recommended is the acceptable solution. However even if a Firestorm Phoenix were to be returned to its owner's hand and this player had another copy of Firestorm Phoenix in his hand, it does not cause problems to just reveal the one in hand when playing the other.
