Ask the Judge, 01/25/2006
Rules Tip of the Day: When paying the costs of an spell or ability, you must pay the entire cost. You cannot choose to pay a portion of a cost in order to avoid mana burn.
Q: Can Djinn Illuminatus's effects be used to copy spell copies created by Eye of the Storm?
A: Yes you can choose to replicate the spells that you play via Eye of the Storm. Eye of the Storm makes copies of cards, which you do play; these copies are not just put on the stack without being played. And as you are playing these spells, you can choose to use the Replicate ability that these Eye of the Storm copies now have.
Q: What is the converted mana cost of a Replicate copy on the stack? I ask this because my friend says you can cast Shattering Spree with a Chalice of the Void for 1 in play, and the original is countered, but the Replicate copy wont be.
A: The converted mana cost of a Replicate copy is the same as the original spell. However, what your friend told you is correct, but not because the copy has a different converted mana cost. Chalice of the Void triggers when you play a spell, not when a copy of a spell is put on the stack. So the Chalice's ability will counter the original, but not any of the Replicate copies.
Q: I have Night of Souls' Betrayal in play and Leyline of the Meek. When I generate a 1/1 token, will it live or die?
A: It lives. The effects from both Leyline of the Meek and Night of Souls' Betrayal will be applied before state-based effects are checked, so this token creature will come into play as a 1/1.
Q: I have two copies of Leyline of Lightning in play, and on turn 3 I cast Lantern Kami, paying 2 extra. My question is: do multiple Leylines stack? Can I, then, deal 2 damage in the above scenario?
A: Yes. Whenever you play a spell, the abilities of each Leyline of Lightning will trigger. When each of these triggered abilities resolves, you will be able to pay one mana to deal a point of damage to the targeted player.
Q: How long does Haunt continue? In other words, after the haunted creature leaves play, does another creature become haunted? Does this continue over and over again until there are no creatures to haunt?
A: When a Haunt card is removed form the game, it only haunts one creature. When that creature leaves play, there is no further effect from the original Haunt card.
Q: If a player reveals an "X" cost spell—such as Fireball or Psychic Drain—with Dark Confidant's ability, how much life will they lose?
A: The value of X will be zero, as these revealed cards are not on the stack. So a Fireball will cause them to lose one life and a Psychic Drain will cause them to lose two life.
Q: If I have Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker and Mirror Gallery in play, could I make a copy of Kokusho, the Evening Star?
A: No. Mirror Gallery does not remove the targeting restriction of Kiki-Jiki's ability.
Q: When I sacrifice Phage the Untouchable in a multiplayer game while Endless Whispers is in play, I can give Phage to one of my opponents at the end of the current turn. What happens with Phage after that opponent loses the game? Can that opponent give Phage the Untouchable back to me, or does she simply go to my graveyard?
A: That copy of Phage will leave the game. When a player in a multi-player games leaves the game, once you remove all objects they control from the game, and end all effect that have granted control of a permanent to them, you then remove all objects they still control from the game. In this instance there are no control effect that are applied to this Phage, so it won't remain in play.
Q: If, in a multiplayer game, I play Thought Prison, and remove a card from Player A's hand, is the card still imprinted if Player A leaves the game?
A: No, when a player leaves the game all cards they own will leave the game with them. It does not matter that this card was in the removed from game zone.
