Rules Tip of the Day: After blocking creatures have been declared, even if no creatures are blocking, both player will receive priority before combat damage goes on the stack. An unblocked attacking creature can have its power raised at this point in order for it to deal an increased amount of combat damage.
Q: I have a Djinn Illuminatus in play. If I play Seething Song, and Replicate it, can I keep putting mana from the copies into the original on the stack to Replicate it indefinitely?
A: No. You can only pay the Replicate cost when you play a spell with Replicate. A copy may resolve and add mana to your pool, but by then you've already played the original spell.
Q: My opponent has Drift of Phantasms and Plagued Rusalka, with one Black mana available. I attack with Skyknight Legionnaire, which gets blocked with Drift. During the second main phase, I play Graven Dominator. We weren't sure whether my opponent can—in response—sac a would-be dead defender to Rusalka to make my flyer 1/1, causing him to die after Graven Dominator's comes-into-play effect resolves, or if my flyer would survive as a 1/1. What is the right outcome in this situation?
A: First of all, yes your opponent can respond to the coming into play ability of the Graven Dominator by sacrificing the Drift of Phantasms. If he does, then the timestamp of this effect will be before the timestamp of the Graven Dominator's coming into play ability. Because of this, your Skyknight Legionnaire will remain in play as a 1/1 creature. This is because the effects from the Plagued Rusalka and the Graven Dominator are applied in the same effects layer, according to timestamp order. When calculating these effects, the Skyknight will start as a 2/2, get -1/-1 to become a 1/1, and then have its power and toughness set to 1/1.
Q: I have Savannah Lions, Ink-Treader Nephilim, and Grip of Chaos in play. What happens to my opponent's Lightning Bolt if he targets the Lions, and Grip of Chaos changes the target to the Nephilim?
A: The ability of Ink-Treader Nephilim will not trigger. Ink-Treader Nephilim's ability only triggers when a spell is played and the Ink-Treader Nephilim is the only target of this spell. If the target of a spell is changed, so the Ink-Treader is the new target, the trigger condition will not have been met. In this example, the Bolt will resolve as normal and deal 3 damage to the Nephilim.
Q: Can I play an instant using Sunforger and then Replicate it?
A: Yes. You can choose to play the Replicate cost of a spell played via Sunforger.
Q: If a player has Circu, Dimir Lobotomist in play, do Blue spells that are Replicated trigger his ability for each copy, or just for the original?
A: Circu's abilities only trigger when you play a Blue or Black spell. Copies of spells created by the Replicate ability are not played, and therefore Circu's ability will not trigger for these copies.
Q: Does Master Warcraft target creatures? I am trying to figure out if creatures with Protection from Red or White can be assigned to attack or block by Master Warcraft.
A: Master Warcraft does not target anything. After it has resolved you can choose to to force creatures with Protection from Red or White to attack or block.
Q: I enchant Hazezon Tamar with Vanishing. When he phases out, clearly all the Sand tokens will vanish as well. But when he comes back into play, do I get Sand Warriors again during that upkeep?
A: Yes, you will get new Sand Warrior tokens. While phasing in and out does not trigger comes-into-play or leaves-play triggered abilities, Hazezon Tamar's ability triggers at the beginning of your upkeep, so this ability will trigger if Hazezon has come into play by any means since the beginning of your last upkeep.
Q: I control a Dispersing Orb, and have Confiscated my opponent's Grizzly Bears. I have eight Blue mana in my pool. If I don't pass priority between activations, is it possible to sacrifice both the Confiscate and the Bears to return two target permanents to their owners' hands? Or, once I have sacrificed either the Confiscate or the Bears, will I be unable to sacrifice the other? Does the order in which I sacrifice them matter?
A: You will not be able to sacrifice both the Confiscate and the Bears to "bounce" two targeted permanents to their owners' hands. If you sacrifice the Confiscate, you will not control the Bears any longer, so you will be unable to sacrifice them. If you sacrifice the Bears, then the Confiscate will go to the graveyard. This is because immediately after activating Dispersing Orb's ability, state-based effects are checked and Confiscate will go to the graveyard, as it is not attached to anything.
