Rules Tip of the Day: There are only a few decisions and choices that you have to make when playing a spell or ability. They are: 1) mode, if the spell is modal, 2) the value of 'X' in a variable cost, 3) whether the spell is being played via some alternate method other than by paying the mana cost, 4) the targets of the spell or ability, 5) if targets or untargeted objects are affected in different ways, how each one is affected. All other choices are made when the spell or ability resolves.
Q: Player A has Ivory Mask. Can Player B play Hunted Dragon, assuming he has no other opponents?
A: Yes, he can still play it. When Hunted Dragon comes into play, its triggered ability will go on the stack. Since a legal target can not be chosen, the triggered abilities will then leave the stack without doing anything.
Q: Can Szadek, Lord of Secrets deal damage to your opponent instead of using its effect?
A: No, whether or not to apply the effect from Szadek's ability is not optional. If Szadek would deal combat damage to a player, instead Szadek will get the counters and the player that would be damage gets milled. You cannot choose to do otherwise.
Q: I have Teysa, Orzhov Scion, Blind Hunter, and two other White creatures. My opponent has Hunted Lammasu. If I sacrifice the Blind Hunter and my two other White creatures to target the Lammasu, can I Haunt the Lammasu before it dies?
A: Yes, because you sacrifice these three creatures as the cost, so the Haunt triggered ability will resolve before Teysa's ability does. However, Teysa's ability removes the targeted creature from the game, it doesn't destroy it. So if you Haunt the Lammasu, the Haunt ability will not trigger when the Lammasu is removed from the game.
Q: Warp World reveals a Confiscate for each player, and we both target the same creature. What happens?
A: Both Confiscates will come into play at the same time, so the active player can choose their timestamp of each. Barring an effect like Quicken, the person who played the Warp World is the active player, and can choose to have the effect from his Confiscate applied last, which will cause him to gain control of the doubly enchanted creature.
Q: I have Leyline of Singularity in play, two Mishra's Factorys, two Faerie Conclaves, and enough mana available to activate all of the man lands. The question is, if I activate both Factories and the two Conclaves, will they destroy each of the pairs because of the Leyline?
A: No, these animated lands will not go to the graveyard. Leyline of Singularity only makes nonland permanents Legendary. It doesn't matter that these lands are now creatures; the effect that animates them specifically states that they are still lands, and therefore cannot be nonlands.
Q: I play Bribery on an opponent, and put a Kokusho, the Evening Star from his library into play. A few turns later, another opponent steals the Kokusho with an Infernal Denizen. That opponent fails to pay the upkeep cost of the Infernal Denizen, so the Kokusho is given to yet another opponent. When the Infernal Denizen leaves play, who controls the Kokusho: the opponent who gave it away with the Denizen, the player with the most recent non-Denizen control effect (me, with Bribery), or its owner?
A: You will. This is because when the Denizen leaves play, all of the control effects created by the Denizen's abilities will wear off.
Q: I have Shifting Sky out, changing all nonland permanents to Red and my opponent has Wayward Angel, without Threshold. When he gets Threshold, will Wayward Angel be Black or Red?
A: It depends on which permanent came into play most recently. Whichever did will determine the color of the Angel. If the Shifting Sky came in last, the Angel will be Red. If the Angel came in after the Shifting Sky, it will be Black.
Q: I tap four Islands and play Mirozel. My opponent plays Mana Leak and I have no more mana available. Does Mirozel go back into my hand because of the text on the card, or does that ability not kick in until Mirozel resolves?
A: Mirozel's ability only works when it is in play. In this example, it is a spell on the stack. If you do not pay three mana when Mana Leak resolves, the Mirozel card will go to your graveyard.
