Ask the Judge, 02/27/2006
Rules Tip of the Day: When a permanent changes controllers, it does not untap, unless the effect that causes this change in control also instructs you to untap it.
Q: I have an Ink-Treader Nephilim in play and it is targeted by some spell. What happens if the Nephilim leaves play before the trigger resolves?
A: It does not matter if Ink-Treader leaves play before its triggered ability resolves; the ability will still resolve, puting a copy of the spell that targeted it on the stack for each other creature in play that can be targeted by it.
Q: I play Mimeofacture and target an opponent's permanent. Is it possible to use [[Goblin Flectomancer]'s ability to change the target to my own permanent, so I can search my library?
A: No. When changing the target of a spell or ability, you must still choose a legal target. You cannot change the target to something that could not be chosen when the spell was played.
Q: If I pay B to play Shrieking Grotesque, my opponent discards a card. What if then I play Ghostway—does my opponent have to discard again when the Grotesque comes back?
A: No. When this Shrieking Grotesque returns to play, you did not play it, so its comes-into-play ability can not trigger.
Q: Will the copies made from Eye of the Storm's ability trigger abilities such as Gelectrode and Wee Dragonauts?
A: Yes, when Eye of the Storm's triggered ability resolves, copies of the removed from game cards are made and you can play these copies. As these copies are played—not just put on the stack without being played—the abilities of Gelectrode and Wee Dragonauts will trigger.
Q: Can I use the "draw a card" ability of Sensei's Divining Top and return it with Words of Wind to my hand before putting it on top of my library?
A: Yes, that works. With these two permanents in play, you can activate the ability of the Divining Top and respond by activating the Words of Wind ability. When the Top's ability resolves you would normally draw a card, but this action will be altered by the Words of Wind replacement effect, so each player will return a permanent they control to their hand instead. You can choose to return the Top to your hand to satisfy this effect. Then, when you reach the second portion of the Top's effect, you cannot put the top on top of your library, so you ignore this instruction. With the Top in your hand, you can repeat the process for just two more mana.
Q: If I sacrifice Modular creatures when Phyrexian Dreadnought comes into play, can I move the Modular counters onto the Dreadnought?
A: Yes, that works. You sacrifice creature with a combined power of 12 or more when the Dreadnought would come into play. If you sacrifice Modular creatures, then the Modular triggered ability will go on the stack after the Dreadnought spell has completely resolved and it has come into play. At this point, you will be able to target the Dreadnought with these triggered abilities.
Q: If Robber Fly is blocked by more than one creature, does the opponent discard their hand for each creature blocking Robber Fly?
A: No. Robber Fly's ability triggers just once each time that it is blocked. It does not matter if it is blocked by multiple creatures. If the ability read "Whenever Robber Fly becomes blocked by a creature..." then this ability would trigger once for each blocking creature.
Q: I attacked with Flesh Reaver into a Frenetic Efreet. The local judge said that if the Efreet phases out while damage is on the stack, the Efreet does not die, but the Reaver does do four points of damage to it, triggering Flesh Reaver's ability. I would think that the Reaver would not deal damage, because it has nothing in front of it to hit. Who is correct?
A: You are. If the Efreet phases out and is in not in play when combat damage is dealt, then the Reaver will not deal any combat damage and its ability will not trigger.
Q: If I tapped Forbidden Orchard to get some mana with Kismet in play, would the 1/1 creature from the Orchard come into play tapped, or would Kismet not apply, since they didn't play it?
A: The 1/1 Spirit creature token will come into play tapped. Kismet's effect is applied to all permanent that enter play under an opponent's control, not just those that are played.
Q: I was wondering if Doubling Season will double the Time counters placed on a Time Vault when you skip a turn? This would result in you getting to take two turns for every one turn your opponent plays. That could be pretty sweet.
A: Yes, it will double the number of Time counters that are put on Time Vault. However, it will not cause you to take two additional turns. When you activate Time Vault's second ability, you will remove all time counters on the Vault and take just one additional turn.
