Ask the Judge, 03/01/2006
Rules Tip of the Day: Magic Acronym—LIFO—It stands for Last In, First Out and describes how objects on the stack resolve. The top item, or the last one placed on the stack, will resolve first.
Q: I have a creature that has been Haunted by Seize the Soul. My opponent plays Wrath of God, destroying this Haunted creature and all other creatures in play. There are no nonwhite, nonblack creatures that I can target with the Haunt ability and destroy, but will I get the token creatures?
A: No. In this example, when Seize the Soul's Haunt triggered ability goes on the stack, there is no legal target to choose. Because you cannot choose a target, the ability will then leave the stack without doing anything. And because the ability leaves the stack without resolving, you won't get the 1/1 Spirit creatures.
Q: I have Djinn Illuminatus in play and I play Scatter the Seeds. When I play this Scatter, I tap three creatures to lower its cost. Does this lower the Replicate cost? In other words, can I play the Scatter and Replicate it once, for a cost of tapping three creatures and GGGG?
A: No. The Convoke ability lowers the total cost to play a spell. It does not affect the converted mana cost of the spell. In this example, if you tap three nongreen creatures, you would have to pay 3GGGG in order to play this Scatter the Seeds and Replicate it once.
Q: If an opponent controls Goblin Flectomancer and I play Thunderheads, can they sacrifice the Flectomancer and get the token?
A: No. Thunderheads does not target anything. When it resolves, the controller of the spell will put these tokens into play under his control. Goblin Flectomancer's ability can only change the target of a spell. It cannot change the controller of one.
Q: I have Yore-Tiller Nephilim in play, and three Yore-Tillers and an Angel of Despair in the graveyard. When the Yore- Tiller attacks and I bring back one of the Yore-Tillers from the graveyard, would the second Yore-Tiller bring back a third? Can I bring back the three Yore-Tillers and the Angel from the graveyard?
A: No. The ability of the Yore-Tiller Nephilim only triggers when it attacks, which means when a non-attacking creature becomes an attacking creature. The creature it brings into play is attacking, but it did not become an attacking creature. So if you bring in another Yore-Tiller Nephilim with the ability of the first, the ability of the second will not trigger.
Q: I play an Auratouched Mage. With its comes-into-play ability on the stack, my opponent plays Bathe in Light and gives White creatures Protection from Red. When the Mage's ability resolves, can I search for Galvanic Arc and put it on the Mage? I'm hoping that I can, even if it'll come into play and fall off. I just want to deal three damage with the Arc's ability.
A: No. A permanent with a protection ability can not be enchanted at all by enchantments with the protected quality. This means that you cannot legally search for a Galvanic Arc and put it into play enchanting the Mage while the Mage has Protection from Red. If the Galvanic Arc is the only Aura in your library, then you will not be able to find anything that can enchant the Mage. The Mage will remain in play unenchanted, and the Arc will remain in your library.
Q: My opponent has Helm of Kaldra, Shield of Kaldra, and Sword of Kaldra in play. He paid 1 and created a 9/9 First Strike, Trample, Hasted, Indestructible creature. On my, turn I play Confiscate and grab his Helm. Does he lose his creature since he no longer controls all of the Kaldra pieces?
A: No. Control of those three pieces of equipment only matters when the Helm of Kaldra's activated ability resolves. After that ability has resolved and your opponent has put the Kaldra token creature into play, it does not matter that he does not control all three pieces of equipment.
Q: I have a face down Daru Lancer in play. I attack, and my opponent blocks with a 1/1. He then casts Humble on the Lancer. Can I morph my Lancer afterwards so that it will become a 3/4 and kill the 1/1?
A: You can pay the Morph cost, but this will not make the Lancer a 3/4. The effect from Humble will still be applied, to it so your Lancer will be a 0/1 creature.
Q: In a game of Two-Headed Giant, if my partner has Searing Meditation out, do life gain effects affecting me allow him to trigger his Meditation? Or does his Meditation care about who gains the life regardless of a shared life total?
A: In Two-Headed Giant games, damage, life gain, and life loss are applied to each player individually. This is then applied to the team's shared life total. So if you gain life, it will cause the team's shared life total to increase, but this does not count as your teammate gaining life. Because of this, Searing Meditation's ability will not trigger when you gain life.
