Rules Tip of the Day: Banding, Part 3: Damage Sharing—Normally, the controller of a creature gets to decide how to assign that creature's combat damage. However, Banding will allow the controller of a Banding creature to make the decision of how to assign all combat damage from any creatures blocking or blocked by it. For example, let's say I attack with a Benalish Hero (1/1) and a Grizzly Bears (2/2) in a band, and you block with a 3/3 creature. As the controller of the Banding creature, I can assign all of the blocking creature's combat damage. I could assign all three to the Benalish Hero, and then the Grizzly Bear would survive. Using this aspect of banding is different from forming a band to attack in that you only need one creature with the banding to use this ability. For example let's say you attack with an 8/8 creature. I could block with eight 1/1 creatures. As long as one of these creatures had banding I could assign all combat damage from the 8/8 creature to just one of my 1/1 creatures.

Q: What if I copy an enchantment attached to a creature with a Copy Enchantment? What will Copy Enchantment be enchanting?

A: This copy will enchant whatever legal permanent you want. When the Copy Enchantment resolves, you will choose the Aura in play to copy and put this copy on some permanent in play that it can legally enchant. Doing this does not target the permanent you are attaching this Copy Enchantment to, so you can put a copy of Faith's Fetters on a Giant Solifuge.

Q: A Dimir House Guard blocked a Hill Giant, and it was regenerated. After combat, the attacking player played an Orzhov Euthanist. Can the Euthanist target the House Guard with its ability? I know that using a regeneration shield clears all damage from a creature, but the wording of Orzhov Euthanist seems to imply that it could. What's the answer?

A: Yes, you can target a creature with Orzhov Euthanist's ability that has regenerated this turn. It does not matter that the damage that was dealt to this creature is no longer there; it was dealt damage, so it is a legal target of this ability.

Q: I have Bramble Elemental and I put Stasis Cell on it. If I pay the mana to reattach it to the Elemental, will I get two more creature tokens?

A: No, in order for that to work you need to move the Stasis Cell onto another creature and then back to the Bramble Elemental. If the Stasis Cell is on Bramble Elemental, then targeting it with the Cell's ability will not cause the Cell to move or to become attached to the Elemental. Because of this, Bramble Elemental's ability will not trigger.

Q: If I enchant an opponent's creature with Instill Furor, and that creature has the Defender ability, will that creature die at the end of the turn?

A: Yes, the controller of this creature will have to sacrifice it at the end of his turn. It does not matter if the enchanted creature is unable to attack, the ability granted by Instill Furor will still trigger.

Q: If I have True Believer in play and I have a Krosan Restorer, can I still untap those lands?

A: Yes. Krosan Restorer's ability targets lands; it does not target you, even if it targets lands you control.

Q: I have Ambush Commander out, and my opponent plays Pyroclasm. I use Ambush Commander's ability that gives a creature +3/+3 by sacrificing the Commander itself. Doing this will make my Forests no longer Elves. My friend argues that if he plays something at instant speed in response to my Ambush Commander being sacrificed, he will wipe my forests. This is purely a stack related argument about which goes faster. My point is that if I have already paid the cost for my Ambush Commander's ability, will my Forests reverting back into lands go onto the stack as well?

A: You are correct. Ambush Commander's static ability will end when it leaves plays, so the continuous effect it generates will not be applied as soon as it leaves play. The ending of this effect does not use the stack at all. If you respond to the spell that would deal damage to all creatures by sacrificing the Commander, then your Forests will not be creatures when your opponent's damage spell resolves.

Q: I was just recently in an Extended Two-Headed Giant tournament and the following question arose. I was playing a Mind's Desire deck. After doing a whole lot of Storming and "comboing out", I Brain Freezed one of the opposing player's library away. In order to win on the spot instead of giving them an upkeep, my teammate played Words of Wisdom and in response, an opponent played a Brain Freeze, targeting my teammate, milling his entire library.

Does this game end in a draw or with my teammate and I losing? The confusion comes from Words of Wisdom saying that my teammate draws his two cards first; with no library this ends the game. Is this correct?

A: The game will be a draw. It does not matter that your teammate draws first, when state-based effects are checked, one player on each team will have failed to draw a card, so the game will be a draw.
