Ask the Judge, 04/19/2006
Rules Tip of the Day: When a spectator at a match, you should not make any comments or interfere at all. If you notice something illegal has occurred, don't stop the game. Call a judge over to correct the situation.
Q: Can I activate Sunforger's ability to search my library for a Fire / Ice and then play the Ice half of the card?
A: Yes. When resolving Sunforger's ability, you can get any red or white instant card from your library that has a converted mana cost of four or less. Fire / Ice is red and when something asks what its converted mana cost is, it'll receive the answer, 'two and two'. Two is less that four, so you can play this card. You do not have to play the side that is red or white—you can play either side of this split card—so you can play Ice.
Q: If I targeted an Ink-Treader Nephilim with Dream's Grip (the Ink-Treader is mine), could I untap all my guys and then decide to tap all my opponent's creatures?
A: No. Dream's Grip is a modal spell, you choose which mode when you play Dreams' Grip. The copies of the spell that targets the Nephilim are exact copies and will have the same mode. So if you choose to untap the Ink-Treader, all creatures in play will be untapped.
Q: If I have two Ink-Treader Nephilim in play and I target one of them with Giant Growth, does this create a neverending loop of copied Giant Growths?
A: No, that does not create a loop. Ink-Treader Nephilim's ability only triggers when a player plays a spell or ability that targets the Ink-Treader only. That ability will not trigger when copies of spells are put on the stack without being played.
Q: If I play Seize the Soul on an opponent's creature, can I haunt the token that comes into play with Seize the Soul?
A: Yes. Seize the Soul will not go to the graveyard until after it has completely resolved. At that point, the 1/1 spirit tokens it creates will be in play and can be targeted by Seize the Soul's Haunt ability.
Q: I have a Dark Confidant in play and a Shining Shoal in hand. During my draw step, I draw a Ghost Council with the Confidant's ability, and I should take four damage from the Dark Confidant's trigger. Can I pitch the Ghost Council (that I just drew) to Shining Shoal and then assign the four damage that should be done to me to my opponent or one of his creatures?
A: No for two reasons. One, Dark Confidant's ability causes you to lose life; it does not deal damage and Shining Shoal can only redirect damage. The other reason is that you lose this life when this Ghost Council goes to your hand. By the time you can play Shining Shoal, your life total has already gone down.
Q: I have a Gelectrode on the playing field equipped with a Spellbinder that is imprinted with Shock. If I tap the Gelectrode to do a damage, and then play the imprinted Shock, does the Gelectrode untap?
A: No, you cannot play a copy of the imprinted Shock. Spellbinder's ability triggers when the equipped creature deals combat damage. Gelectrode's ability is not combat damage, even if the ability is used in the combat damage step.
Q: Can I use the Transmute ability of a Muddle the Mixture that is imprinted on an Isochron Scepter? If so, can I use it on my opponent's turn?
A: No, that doesn't work. You can imprint Muddle the Mixture onto an Isochron Scepter, but you can only play the copy. You cannot use the activated abilities of the copy generated by Isochron Scepter.
Q: Let's say I have Pariah enchanting my Troll Ascetic and my opponent attacks me with six 3/3 flyers. I declare no blockers. My Troll would take 18 damage because of the Pariah. Can I regenerate my Troll one time to keep him alive? Or must I regenerate him six times?
A: All normal combat damage is dealt at one time, even if it is dealt by multiple creatures. So yes, you'll only have to regenerate this Troll Ascetic once for it to "survive", and you will not receive any damage.
