Rules Tip of the Day: With the exception of a few cards with characteristic-setting text that clearly states otherwise, objects (cards, spells, and permanents) are all of the colors in their mana cost. If there are no colored mana symbols there, then they are colorless.

Q: If Night of Souls' Betrayal is in play while I play Flash Foliage, will I take damage from the attacking creature, or will the token die before it can block?

A: When Flash Foliage resolves, you will put a 0/0 token into play blocking the attacking creature. This token doesn't come into play and then block sometime later; it comes into play blocking. Then, after Flash Foliage has finished resolving, state-based effects will be checked and the token will go to the graveyard. However, at that point the attacking creature has already been blocked and it will not deal any damage to you unless it also has trample.

Q: I have Anthem of Rakdos, Megrim, and Mindslicer in play. When Mindslicer leaves play, both my opponent and I ditch our hands. Is there a way to stack the triggers so that the Anthem will trigger before the Megrim damage, so that Megrim will deal double damage per discarded card?

A: The Anthem's Hellbent ability is not a triggered ability; it is a static ability that doubles any source of damage, as long as you have no cards in hand. So yes, each of the Megrim triggered abilities will end up dealing four points of damage.

Q: If I flip a "karoo" style land (like Izzet Boilerworks) from my library when resolving Coiling Oracle's triggered ability, does this land come into play tapped, and do I return a land to my hand?

A: Yes, this land will come into play tapped and its ability will trigger, so you will have to return a land to your hand.

Q: What happens if someone Remands a spell that you played by unattaching Sunforger? Sunforger reads: "... you may play the card ..."; does that mean that the spell will go from your library to the stack, and then into your hand?

A: Yes, that is what will happen. When you play a spell, regardless of what zone the card came from, you put that card on the stack. If this card is later countered by Remand, then it will go to your hand. It does not matter that it was played via Sunforger's ability.

Q: If I have a non-basic land in play, and my opponent attacks with Dryad Sophisticate, can I use Curtain of Light to block, even though the Dryad has non-basic landwalk? If Curtain of Light can be used, why?

A: Yes, you can use Curtain of Light to block Dryad Sophisticate. A landwalk ability prevents the creature with the ability from being blocked by creatures when blockers are declared, if the defending player has a land with the appropriate quality. It can still be blocked by spells and abilities.

Q: I have Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker in play, and I play Sky Swallower. In response to the comes-into-play ability, I copy the Swallower. Is my understanding of what happens correct? The copy Sky Swallower comes into play, and my opponent gains control of all other permanents I control, including the Sky Swallower I just played. Then, when the comes-into-play ability for the first Sky Swallower resolves, my opponent has to choose me and I gain control of all other permanents he controls. So the end result is I control all permanents on the board except my original Sky Swallower.

A: No, that does not work, for two reasons. The targets for all comes-into-play abilities are chosen when the abilities go on the stack, and the controller of a triggered ability is whoever controlled the ability when it went on the stack. In this example, the triggered ability of the token Sky Swallower will resolve and give your opponent control of all your permanents other than the token Sky Swallower. Then the comes-into-play ability of the original Swallower will resolve, and your opponent will gain control of the token Sky Swallower. In the end, you will not control any permanents.

Q: How do Mindmoil and Moonring Mirror interact when you have them both in play, and you play a card. In what order do the abilities go on the stack? Does Moonring Mirror activate for each card you draw when you draw your new hand due to Mindmoil?

A: When you play a spell, Mindmoil's ability will trigger. When this triggered ability resolves, you will take the cards in your hand and put them on the bottom of your library in any order and then draw cards equal to the number of cards that were in your hand. Moonring Mirror's ability will trigger once for each of these drawn cards. When each of these individual triggered abilities resolves you will take the top card of your library and remove it from the game.

Q: If Impending Disaster is in play and I sacrifice it, can I respond by playing Barrel Down Sokenzan in order to save my own lands?

A: No. Impending Disaster has what is called an intervening-if clause. This ability will trigger at the beginning of your upkeep if there are seven or more lands in play. Then, when the ability goes to resolve, if this condition is still true, you will sacrifice the Impending Disaster and destroy all lands. If you respond to this triggered ability by returning some of your lands to hand, and there are fewer than seven in play when the ability resolves, then the ability will not do anything. Also, you cannot play anything when another spell or ability is resolving, so if you do sacrifice the Impending Disaster, then it is too late to respond.
