Rules Tip of the Day: You can float mana from step to step within a phase. This means you can put mana in your mana pool during the upkeep step and use it in the draw step, or put it in your pool during the declaration of attacker step and later spend it in the combat damage step. But once a phase ends, any mana left in your pool will cause mana burn.
Q: I have no cards in hand and I attack my opponent with Rakdos Pit Dragon. He blocks it with Keiga, the Tide Star and an Assault Zeppelid. I pump the Dragon's power to five and choose to assign the first strike combat damage to Keiga. When this resolves my opponent chooses to target the Pit Dragon with Keiga's ability. Will the Zeppelid receive normal combat damage? Will the Pit Dragon? I'm basically trying to clear the board of creatures.
A: Neither the Rakdos Pit Dragon or the Assault Zeppelid will receive combat damage in this example. When Keiga's ability resolved, the Pit Dragon changed controllers and was removed from combat. This was before normal combat damage went on the stack, so neither of these creatures will assign any normal combat damage. If these were the only creatures in play, then you should have assigned first strike combat damage to the Assault Zeppelid, and dealt lethal damage to Keiga in the normal combat damage step.
Q: When using Valor Made Real, the targeted creature can block any number of other creatures. If a Samurai blocks five creatures and it has Bushido 1, does it get +1/+1 for each creature it blocks?
A: No, the Bushido ability will only trigger once when the creature with Bushido becomes blocked or blocks. It does not matter how many creatures it blocks.
Q: I control an Azorius First-Wing; can I target it with the Forecast ability of Writ of Passage to make it unblockable for that turn?
A: No, the First-Wing cannot be targeted by any ability that has an enchantment as its source. The fact that you are using the Forecast ability of the Writ of Passage does not matter; it is an enchantment, so this ability cannot target the Azorious First-wing.
Q: I attack my opponent with Mindleech Mass. He has no blockers and I play Psychotic Fury. Is all the combat damage assigned at one time, he receives twelve damage and I play only one card from his hand, or is it: first strike is dealt, I play a card from opponents hand, regular combat damage is dealt, then look and play another card?
A: The second option is correct. The Mass will deal six points of damage twice, so its ability will trigger twice. The ability will trigger and resolve once after first strike combat damage resolves and then later after normal combat damage resolves. When each of these triggered abilities resolves, you will be able to look at your opponent's hand, choose a non-land card and play it for free.
Q: There are three sorceries in graveyards, but two of them are split cards, with both halves being sorceries. What is the power and toughness of my Magnivore?
A: Your Magnivore will be a 3/3. An individual split card will only be counted once and give Magnivore +1/+1. It does not matter that both sides of the split card are sorcery spells.
Q: I play Mind's Desire with a Storm count of one, and Remand is the first card revealed by Mind's Desire (from the Storm copy, as I understand it). Can I target the original Mind's Desire with the revealed Remand and get it back in hand?
A: Yes. When you played this Mind's Desire, it went on the stack, followed by the Storm triggered ability. When this triggered ability resolved, the appropriate number of copies of Mind's Desire went on the stack on top of original Mind's Desire. After this first Mind's Desire copy resolves, you will get the chance to play the revealed spell (as long as it is an instant) before anything else resolves. In this specific example, you can choose to Remand the original Mind's Desire.
Q: I have Geth's Grimoire and Words of Wind in play, and my opponent has eight cards in his hand at his end of turn. When he discards down to seven cards in hand, Geth's Grimoire kicks in, and then instead of drawing, I use Words of Wind's ability to return a permanent to his hand, leaving him once again with eight cards in hand. Does he need to discard down again until he reaches seven cards—can this continue till I run out of mana?
A: Yes, that combo does work. Normally, players do not receive priority in the cleanup step. However, if an ability triggers in this step, then it will go on the stack at this point, and each player will receive priority. Then, when both players pass priority on an empty stack, the cleanup step repeats. So you can repeat this process as many times as you have mana available to pay the activation cost of the Words of Wind.
