Rules Tip of the Day: When multiple permanents go to the graveyard at the same time, their owner can choose the order that they appear in the graveyard. However, that does not mean that they leave play one at a time as separate events.
Q: Can I use Simic Guildmage to move an Aura onto Azorius First-Wing? My assumption is that I can, but that it will fall off when state-based effects are checked.
A: That is incorrect. Azorious First-Wing has protection from enchantments, which means that it cannot have an Aura attached to it under any circumstances. The Simic Guildmage ability will resolve and do nothing. The First-Wing cannot be enchanted, so the Aura will stay where it is.
Q: My opponent has Ivory Mask in play, and I have an Isochron Scepter with Hide / Seek as the imprinted card on it. Can I use the Seek part of Hide / Seek to go through his library?
A: No. Seek targets a player, so you cannot play it on a player that cannot be targeted by spells or abilities.
Q: I was wondering if the tokens that Sprouting Phytohydra makes when it takes damage is a creature token for the purposes of Leyline of the Meek. Would they get the +1/+1 benefit?
A: Yes, these Phytohydras are tokens, so they will get +1/+1 from Leyline of the Meek. It does not matter that they are copies, they are still tokens.
Q: When Mindstab Thrull attacks and is unblocked, you can sacrifice it to have defending player discard three cards. Does Mindstab Thrull still do combat damage?
A: No, it will not deal any combat damage. The Thrull's ability triggers after blockers are declared, if the Thrull is not blocked. When this ability resolves is when you are given the opportunity to sacrifice the Thrull. This all occurs before the combat damage step, so if you sacrifice the Thrull, it will not be in play to assign combat damage.
Q: I have Ophidian in play and I cast Morphling. In response my opponent plays Red Elemental Blast targetting my Morphling on the stack. Can I play Misdirection, making the Red Elemental Blast target my Ophidian?
A: No. Red Elemental Blast is a modal spell. You can change the target of Red Elemental Blast with Misdirection, but you cannot change its mode. In other words, you can make this Blast target another blue spell [I suggest the Misdirection that is currently resolving... -Seamus], but you can't make it target a blue permanent.
Q: I have a War's Toll and a Ghostly Prison in play in a multiplayer game. Opponent A has nothing in play; opponent B has two untapped lands and three creatures. If B wants to attack me, can he declare all his creatures as attacking me (to meet War's Toll's requirement), then pay Ghostly Prison for only one of them, leaving the other two untapped and ready to block? Or is he forced to attack A with the other two creatures?
A: First some guidelines on how legal attacks and blocks are made. (You can find this information in section 500 of the comprehensive rules.) When dealing with multiple requirements and restrictions regarding attacking, a player must maximize the number of requirements he is fulfilling, and make sure that he is not violating any restrictions. War's Toll creates a requirement (it forces creatures to attack) and Ghostly Prison's effect is a restriction (it restricts creatures from attacking unless a cost is paid.)
How this works out depends on which multiplayer rules you are using. Assuming that you allow an individual player to attack more than one player in a single combat phase, then War's Toll will make opponent B attack with all of his creatures if he chooses to attack at all. If he does choose to attack, then he will only be able to attack you with one of these creatures, and must choose to attack opponent A with the other two creatures. By doing this, he will be able to fulfill the requirement without violating the restriction.
He cannot choose to have all three attack you and then fail to pay the Ghostly Prison cost in order to prevent two of creatures from attacking. Doing so would mean that he is not maximizing the requirement created by War's Toll.
If you are not using the option to allow a player to attack multiple players, things are a bit different. Your opponent could choose to attack you, and then attack with just one creature. This is because Ghostly Prison will prevent him from attacking with more than the one creature he can pay for.
Q: Does it make any difference if I use something like Bullwhip on one of his creatures?
A: Assuming that he can attack multiple players, if you Bullwhip one of his creatures, then it will be required to attack. Because of War's Toll, all of his creatures will then be required to attack. So he can send all three towards Opponent A, or one to you and the other two to Opponent A.
If you can only attack one player, then this player can negate the requirement of Bullwhip by choosing to attack you and then not attack at all by not paying the cost associated with Ghostly Prison.
