Rules Tip of the Day: The colors of a card are determined by the colored mana in the mana cost in the upper right hand of a card. It does not matter if this card has other colored costs associated with it, like kicker, or a multicolored alternate play cost, like the Bringers from Fifth Dawn. The only exceptions are those cards with characteristic-setting abilities that set their color, like the Kobolds from Legends, and Transguild Courier from Dissension.
Q: I had a question regarding adding age counters to cards with Cumulative Upkeep. Since adding the age counter happens before the cost is paid, do you have to remind your opponent to put an age counter on his card before he pays upkeep, since it is each player's responsibility to keep track of the state of the game? In other words, if my opponent goes to their draw phase without adding an age counter or paying Cumulative Upkeep, can he legitimately argue that I didn't accurately keep track of the game state?
A: It depends on the exact circumstances; if your opponent speeds through his upkeep, and does not give you the chance to point out that he has a Cumulative Upkeep trigger to deal with, then you are not at fault. I find that in most cases, this is what happens, and the non-active player is not given a chance to speak up. However let's say that he pauses and asks, "Are there any upkeep effect to deal with?" Then yes, you cannot just let him proceed without dealing with the ability. [This is a somewhat sticky question and one that is actively under review by DCI policy-setting types. Take any discussion of the subject, including this one, with a grain of salt, and remember that the head judge for a tournament is the final interpreter of the rules. Hopefully, the judge community will come to a consensus on how to handle this in the near future. -Seamus]
Q: Can or not choose not to pay the cumulative upkeep on Braid of Fire?
A: Yes, you can choose to not have this mana added to your mana pool. If you do, then Braid of Fire will go to the graveyard. Adding mana to your mana pool may not seem like a cost, but that does not mean that it is mandatory.
Q: If I have two Pride of the Clouds out, do they build off each other, or do they get +1/+1 for every creature in play that is not a Pride of the Clouds?
A: When a card refers to itself by name it means 'this card.' So each of these Pride of the Clouds will get +1/+1 from the other.
Q: How do Teferi's Puzzle Box and Psychic Possession work together? The Puzzle Box says "at the beginning of each player's draw step," but with Psychic Possession in play, you skip your draw step. So I'm not sure how they would interact.
A: Because the player who controls the Psychic Possession skips his draw step, the ability of Teferi's Puzzle Box will not trigger during his turn. Then, at the beginning of the other player's draw step, the controller of the Psychic Possession will end up drawing a lot of cards.
Q: How do Dark Confidant and Uba Mask interact? Dark Confidant does not say 'draw.'
A: As you pointed out, Dark Confidant's ability does not have you draw, so the effect form Uba Mask will not be applied to it. When the Confidant's ability resolves, you will reveal the top card of your library, lose life equal to its converted mana cost and put it into your hand as normal.
Q: A friend of mine used Carry Away to take control of one of my Shurikens, and then used it with one of his creatures. Now, Carry Away says that he controls the equipment, but the Shuriken says that when it's used by a non-Ninja, it changes controllers. Who will control the Shuriken?
A: If the equipment is used by a non-Ninja, you will regain control of it. It does not matter that the control effect generated by Carry Away is from a static ability; the last control effect generated by the Shuriken will determine who controls this equipment.
Q: If my opponent has a creature equipped with Whispersilk Cloak and I have Ensnaring Bridge, with no cards in my hand, can the creature attack?
A: Not if its power is greater than the number of cards in your hand. Ensnaring Bridge's ability does not target anything. The effect from it is applied to all creatures, regardless of whether or not they can be targeted.
Q: If I have Shape Stealer equipped with an artifact that gives it +2/+2, and my opponent blocks it with a 5/5 creature, will my Shape Stealer be 5/5 or 7/7?
A: The P/T-setting effect of Shape Stealer is applied before you apply any bonuses from the static abilities of Auras or equipment, so your Shape Stealer will become a 7/7.
