Rules Tip of the Day: Aura enchantments (which used to be called local enchantments) only target when they are spells on the stack. When they are permanents in play, they no longer target the permanents they enchant.
Q: With Grand Arbiter Augustin IV in play, can the card Second Sunrise be imprinted onto Isochron Scepter?
A: No. The abilities of Grand Arbiter Augustin IV only affects what you pay when you play spells. This ability does not change the converted mana cost of cards.
Q: I have nine permanents including Rakdos the Defiler and a Pentavus with all five counters on it. I attack. I determine that I need to sacrifice four permanents, make four Pentavite tokens from the Pentavus, and sac the tokens, thus not having to sac any of my other permanents. Does this work?
A: No that does not work like that. When Rakdos' triggered ability resolves, you determine the number of non-Demon permanents you own, and then sacrifice half of them. You do not get the opportunity to play spells and abilities in between counting the non-Demon permanents and when you perform the sacrifice. In order to sacrifice a Pentavite to this ability, it will have to be in play when the ability starts to resolve. However this means that it will have been counted as one of the non-Demon permanents, and it will have raised the number of permanents you have to sacrifice.
Q: I control a Protean Hulk. When it dies, can I find four Phyrexian Dreadnoughts and have two sacrifice the other two?
A: No that does not work. The creatures that you put into play with Protean Hulk's ability all enter play at the same time. However, a Phyrexian Dreadnought has errata so that it will not even enter play unless you sacrifice creatures with power equal to 12 or more. So none of these Dreadnoughts will be in play when you need to sacrifice creatures.
Q: How does Replicate (courtesy of Djinn Illuminatus) work with split cards?
A: When you play a split card, you choose one half to play, and this card goes on the stack as that half only. If a Djinn Illuminatus is in play, you can choose to Replicate this spell by paying its mana cost, but you are Replicating the spell, not the card, so you cannot play the other half of this split card.
Q: I was wondering what happens if you have a contradiction on two cards. If I have a Muse Vessel in play, and I also have previously played Enduring Ideal. The Epic effect from Enduring Ideal says I cannot play spells, however the Muse Vessel says that I can play cards that have been removed from the game by it.
A: Whenever two effects contradict each other the one that says "can't" wins. In this example, you will not be able to play the non-land cards that have been removed from the game by Muse Vessel.
Q: With Blood Moon in play, are the non-basic lands that have been turned into Mountains still non-basic? If I were to target one with Sowing Salt, would I remove all other Mountains in that player's deck?
A: Blood Moon does not change the supertypes of the lands that it affects; specifically, they do not become basic lands. So yes, you can target one of these lands with Sowing Salt. However, Blood Moon does not change the names of these cards, so you will only be able to search the appropriate player's library, hand, and graveyard for those cards with the same name as the targeted land, not Mountains.
Q: Does Joiner Adept's ability allow you to tap a mana for two or just make that mana any color?
A: Joiner Adept gives lands you control an additional mana ability. You can choose to activate this land's other mana ability or the one granted by the Joiner at one time, but not both. The Joiner's ability does not increase the mana you make, it just gives you options as to what colors are generated.
Q: Regarding Ashes of the Fallen, do creatures keep the added creature type if and when they are returned to play from the graveyard?
A: No. The effect from Ashes of the Fallen only affects creature cards in your graveyard. Once a creature card leaves your graveyard, Ashes of the Fallen will no longer affect it.
