Ask the Judge, 07/27/2006
Rules Tip of the Day: Coldsnap will be legal in all constructed formats on August 20th. It will remain in both Standard and Extended until Time Spiral block rotates out of each of those formats.
Q: In play, I have Thrumming Stone. Three spells have already been played this turn. What will happen when I play Brain Freeze? Do the Storm copies Ripple? Do the Rippled Brain Freezes (from my library) Storm?
A: In this example, Brain Freeze will go on the stack and the Ripple triggered ability and the Storm triggered ability will go on top of this spell in whatever order you choose.
On the second question, no. Ripple will not trigger for the copies made by the Storm triggered ability. Ripple only triggers when you play a spell, not when a copy of a spell goes on the stack.
And finally, yes, any copy of Brain Freeze that you play will have the Storm ability trigger. This is because the as you are playing the revealed cards when the Ripple ability resolves, and the Storm ability triggers when you play the Storm spell.
Q: Does Adarkar Valkyrie need to be in play when the targeted creature dies, in order for its activated ability to return a creature to play? For example, if I use the ability on a creature that is about to receive lethal damage and my opponent destroys the Valykrie in response, will the targeted creature return to play?
A: When the Valkyrie's ability resolves a delayed triggered ability is created. This creature will be returned to play when this delayed triggered ability resolves; the Valkyrie does not have to be in play at this that time.
Q: I have a Celestial Ancient and a Dovescape in play, and I play Pacifism. The Pacifism will get countered by the Dovescape ability, and my creatures will get +1/+1 counters from the Celestial Ancient, correct?
A: Yes, you are correct, the ability of Celestial Ancient will trigger even if the enchantment spell that triggered the ability is countered. In fact, as you control both Dovescape and Celestial Ancient you can determine the order that these triggered abilities go on the stack and therefore the ability that they resolve in. So if you put the Ancient's ability on the stack first, the token creatures that are put into play by Dovescape due to this countered enchantment will also get the +1/+1 counters.
Q: My opponent has Phyrexian Arena in play and I have Psychic Possession in play. My turn, I play another Psychic Possession. During his turn, how many cards should I draw?
A: You will draw four cards during your opponent's turn. Psychic Possession has a triggered ability that triggers whenever your opponent draws a card. Each time your opponent draws, the ability of each will trigger and go on the stack. When both have resolved, you will have drawn two cards. As your opponent is drawing an additional card each turn due to his Phyrexian Arena, the Possession's abilities will each trigger twice.
Q: If I activate Boseiju, Who Shelters All for a colorless mana and then filter it through a card that changes it to a colored mana, like Initiates of the Ebon Hand, does it lose the "Cannot be countered" effect, since it's no longer the colorless mana?
A: You really don't actually filter the mana, you are paying mana from one ability to generate mana with another. So any spell you play with this black mana will be able to be countered.
Q: I have a question about the interaction of Burning Wish and Necropotence. Necropotence allows me to pay one life to remove the top card of my library face down, and put it into my hand at end of turn. Now, if I have a Burning Wish, can I wish for a card removed by the Necropotence? For example, I have Necro in play and I Vampiric Tutored for Tendrils of Agony. Can I pay one life to remove the Tendrils from the game, then Burning Wish it to my hand?
A: No, the cards removed from the game by Necropotence are face down, so you do not know what type they are. In this specific example you do know what the type of this card is, however this removed card is face down so there is no way to confirm this when conducting your search. [Death Wish is a little different in this regard; you can fetch a face down card with it. If you have more than one face-down card to choose from, you must select randomly -Seamus]
Q: I play Puppet's Verdict and lose the flip, destroying all creatures with power three or greater. Can I kill my Goblin King with Lightning Bolt, to reduce the power of my other Goblins, saving them? If I win the flip, can I use pump abilities to raise the power of my goblins, in order to save them?
A: No, you cannot do what you want. When Puppet's Verdict resolves, you flip a coin and destroy the appropriate creatures. No player will receive priority to do anything in between when you flip the coin and when the creatures are destroyed.

Abe takes a mighty stab at producing a Snow Matters Five-Color 250-card deck. While not designed to be competitive, it is certainly a lot of fun for the casual
Having myself fallen one round short of the joy of drafting Coldsnap, it is left to the two Grand Prix tournaments from last weekend to illumine us as to what is actually going on with the Limited formats that we will be seeing...
After thoroughly destroying Ben Goodman in the previous round, Talen turns his laser eyes toward fresh meat. His opponent this week? Josh Claytor.
