Rules Tip of the Day: Effects that refer to creatures mean creatures in play, not creature cards in any other zone. This also applies to effects that deal with the other permanent types.

Q: How does Commandeer work with a Ripple spell? Do I Ripple, or does the owner?

A: The player who actually played the spell will control the Ripple triggered ability. When this player completes the announcement process for the spell, the Ripple triggered ability will go on the stack. Even if you Commandeer the original spell, he will still control the Ripple trigger. When this triggered ability resolves, he will reveal the top four cards of his library and be able to play any card that shares a name with the played spell, even if he no longer controls the original spell at this point.

Q: If Player A attacks with a Drelnoch and Player B blocks with two creatures, does the Drelnoch ability trigger twice?

A: No. Drelnoch's ability triggers whenever it becomes blocked, so it will only trigger once regardless of the number of creatures that block it. If the ability was written "Whenever Drelnoch becomes blocked by a creature,..." then it would trigger once for each blocking creature.

Q: Are you able to pay the recover cost of Garza's Assassin if you have zero life? I have a Platinum Angel and an Aluren in play, and two Garza's Assassins in my hand; would I be able to repeatedly play, sacrifice, and pay the recover cost to abuse cards such as Angelic Chorus and Pandemonium? It seems like the Recover cost would be zero life, as half of zero rounded up is still zero.

A: Yes, that does work. If your life total is zero and you have some effect that prevents you from losing due to this, you can pay zero life to return Garza's Assassin to your hand when the recover triggered ability resolves. As you poinedt out, this only works because the Recover ability does not refer to a specific number. If it said, for example, pay 3 life, then you could not do this, as you would not have the necessary life to pay.

Q: I cast Skyshroud Claim, leaving five lands untapped. Am I allowed to fetch two Forests, putting them into play untapped, and then cast the Panglacial Wurm, or do I have to cast the Wurm before I find the lands?

A: You are only allowed to play Panglacial Wurm from your library when you are actively searching through your library. If you find the card or cards you are looking for and move them from the library to some other zone, then the search is done and you cannot play the Wurm at this point. In order to play the Wurm, you would have to have 5GG available after you have played Skyshroud Claim. You cannot use the mana from the Forests you search for to pay for the Wurm.

Q: I have an Unliving Psychopath which I have made into a 2/2 with its first activated ability. I then use its second activated ability and target a Civic Wayfinder in play. In response to this ability, my opponent plays Wildsize and targets his Wayfinder. I then activate the Psychopath's first ability two more times. Will the Wayfinder be destoroyed?

A: Yes it will. In this example when the last two activations of Unliving Psychopath's first activated ability resolve the Psychopath will becomes a 4/0 creature and go to the graveyard. Then, when its second activated ability (targeting the Wayfinder) resolves, the game will use the last known information regarding the Psychopath. At the point in which it left play the Psychopath's power was four, so this ability will destroy the pumped up Wayfinder.

Q: If I have a Blood Moon in play, and my opponent plays a Gemstone Mine, does it get the three counters or not?

A: Yes, it does come into play with the three counters. That ability creates a replacement effect that is applied as the Gemstone Mine comes into play. At that point it is obviously not in play yet, so the effect from Blood moon is not applied to it.

Q: I play the Kicker cost on Desolation Giant. When it comes into play, do all of my creatures get destroyed?

A: No, not all. The phrase "all other creatures" in Desolation Giant's ability means all creatures other than the Giant itself. If you pay the kicker cost then all creatures other than the Giant are destroyed, including creatures controlled by you.
