Ask the Judge, 08/03/2006
Rules Tip of the Day: The Graft ability does not target anything. You can move a +1/+1 counter onto a creature that cannot be targeted with the Graft triggered ability.
Q: If I Imprint a Mountain on an Extraplanar Lens, does my opponent's Snow-Covered Mountain get to tap for two mana?
A: No. Extraplanar Lens only makes lands with the same name as the Imprinted land card generate additional mana, this means that the name must match exactly. A Snow-Covered Mountain has the subtype Mountain, but ie has a different name from the Imprinted land card, so it will not generate the additional mana in this situation.
Q: Can I change the target of Lightning Storm by sacrificing Goblin Flectomancer?
A: Yes, that works. You can change the target of Lightning Storm with other effects, not just with Lightning Storm's own activated ability.
Q: Can I use Genju on the different dual lands from Ravnica block?
A: Yes, as long as one of the basic types matches the type that the Genju can be attached to. For example you can attach a Genju of the Fields to a Godless Shrine, Hallowed Fountain, Sacred Foundry, or Temple Garden.
Q: If my wife has Grand Arbiter Augustin IV in play, do the activated abilities of my Selesnya Guildmage cost an extra mana to activate?
A: No, the abilities of Grand Arbiter Augustin iV only affect spells, not activated abilities.
Q: Ink-Treader Nephilim's ability says that it triggers when it is targeted by a spell where the Nephilim is the only targert. Can I use Carom on it and pick the second target on a case-by-case basis?
A: No. When the Ink-Treader's ability resolves, copies of Carom will go on the stack for each other creature in play, but you can not choose to change any of the targets. Each of the copies made by the Ink-Treader will end up targeting the same creature twice. When each of these copies resolves, a replacement effect will be created which will really end up doing nothing. However, you will end up drawing a card for each of these copies.
Q: I have Uyo, Silent Prophet in play. A friend of mine plays Insurrection. I activate Uyo's ability in response. What happens?
A: Assuming nothing else is played then this situation will end up as if you did not make a copy of this Insurrection at all. When Uyo's ability resolves, a copy of Insurrection will go on the stack. This copy will resolve, all creatures in play will untap and you will gain control of them. Then the original Insurrection will resolve; all creatures in play will untap again, and your opponent will gain control of them. Making a copy of the Insurrection will not prevent your opponent from eventually gaining control of all creatures in play.
Keep in mind that after your copy resolves, and before the original does, you will have the chance to play spells and abilities. You could counter the original at this point to prevent your opponent from gaining control of all creatures in play.
Q: Can I activate Metathran Aerostat a number of times so that I can put more than one creature card from my hand into play, returning the Metathran Aerostat to my hand immediately after the first creature comes into play?
A: Yes, this works. You can respond to the first activation of this ability by activating it again. The ability that was played second will resolve first. When it does, you will put a creature with a converted mana cost of X into play and return the Aerostat to your hand. Then the initial activation will resolve and put a creature with a converted mana cost of X into play. You won't be able to return the Aerostat to your had as it is no longer in play. However, that doesn't mean that you won't put a creature card into play.
Q: If the counters are removed from Gemstone Mine by Aether Snap, do you sacrifice the Mine right away?
A: You only sacrifice the Mine when you resolve the mana ability. So if these counters are removed by Aether Snap, the Gemstone Mine will remain in play. Then, when its mana ability is used later, you'll get one mana of any color and then sacrifice the Mine.
