Rules Tip of the Day: Trample changes how combat damage is assigned, not how it is dealt.
Q: I have Enduring Renewal out in play and my opponent has an Adarkar Valkyrie. If I sac a creature to Ashnod's Altar for mana, who would get my creature if my opponent used the Angel's ability?
A: It depends on whose turn it is. In this example, the delayed triggered ability created by Adarkar Valkyrie's ability and the ability of Enduring Renewal will trigger at the same time. When multiple abilities trigger at the same time, they go on the stack in APNAP (Active Player, Non-Active Player) order. This means that those controlled by the active player go on the stack in whatever order he wants, followed by those controlled by the non-active player in whatever order he wants. Then these triggered abilities will resolve in LIFO (Last In, First Out) order. In other words, the last item added to the stack will resolve first. So the non-active player will end up getting this creature. If it is you, it will be in your hand; if it is your opponent, it will be in play.
Q: If a black creature is sent to the graveyard and removed from the game by Void Maw with Teysa, Orzhov Scion in play, would you still get the token creature from Teysa's ability?
A: No, you will not. A black creature that would go to the graveyard is removed from the game instead, due to Void Maw's ability, so Teysa's ability will not trigger.
Q: I have Tidespout Tyrant in play. If I play Gigadrowse and pay its Replicate cost four times, does doing this trigger Tidespout Tyrant's ability four times?
A: No. The Replicate ability puts copies of the Replicate spell on the stack; these copies are not played. You are only playing one spell in this example, so the Tyrant's ability will only trigger once.
Q: If I play a Farseek and search and find a new Ravnica shockland, can I put it into play untapped by losing the 2 life?
A: No. You can choose to pay two life, but it will still come into play tapped. This is because the ability allows you to pay two life; if you do not, they come into play tapped. If you do, however, they come into play as they normally would. Farseek puts the chosen land into play tapped, so even if you do pay two life, this land will enter play tapped.
Q: My opponent has Ground Seal in play and my Elvish Soultiller was sent to the graveyard. Does Elvish Soultiller's ability still work even though my opponent controls a Ground Seal?
A: Yes, Elvish Soultiller's ability does not target, and this triggered ability will not be affected by Ground Seal at all.
Q: If a player successfully casts a mass-removal spell (Wrath of God, Pyroclasm, Flame Wave, etc.), in what order do cards go into the graveyard? Imagine that one of the players has, five creatures in play, and two of them have Auras on them. In what order do all the creatures and the enchantments go into the 'yard?
A: When multiple cards go to the graveyard at the same time, the owner of these cards to gets to choose the order that these cards are arranged in their library. In the example given, the creatures destroyed by this mass removal spell will go to the graveyard first, assuming that this spell does not also destroy the enchantments at the same time. Then the enchantments will go once state-based effects are checked, as they are not legally in play.
Q: If there is a City of Solitude in play, and my opponent plays a spell which causes me to discard a Guerilla Tactics, can I play the ability to deal the four damage?
A: Yes. That ability is a triggered ability that automatically triggers when an effect controlled by an opponent causes you to discard Guerilla Tactics. It is not playing a spell, so City of Solitude will not prevent the ability from triggering or resolving.
Q: If I have a Glacial Chasm and a Soul Echo in play can I pay for the cumulative upkeep into the negatives, since I don't lose the game as result of having less than 1 life?
A: No. You won't lose the game if you have a life total of zero or below, but you cannot pay life that you do not have.
Q: I would like to know how Web of Inertia works during Two-Headed Giant games. If my teammate has it out, do our opponents need to remove cards in the graveyard to attack our team, or can they attack and deal the damage to me?
A: In Two-headed Giant games, you don't attack a player—you attack a team. If an effect prevents one player on a team from being attacked, then it will prevent the team from being attacked. In order for creatures to attack your team, their controller will have to remove a card from their graveyard at the beginning of the combat phase when Web of Inertia's triggered ability resolves. For both players to attack you with creatures they control, each team member on the opposing team will have to remove a card in their graveyard from the game.
