Rules Tip of the Day: Regeneration only replaces destruction from an effect or destruction due to lethal damage. It cannot keep a creature that has had its toughness lowered to zero or below in play.
Q: I have Blood Moon and a Flagstones of Trokair in play. A second Flagstones is put into play. What happens?
A: When state-based effects are checked, both of these Flagstones of Trokair will go to the graveyard. However, as both of them left play as Mountains, they did not have triggered abilities, so no one will not be able to search for Plains.
Q: With Chronatog Totem and Chronosavant, the "skip your next turn" isn't part of the cost, but an effect. Does that mean you could put two Chronosavants from your graveyard into play, or make both your Chronatog totems get +3/+3, and only skip one turn?
A: No. Each time you activate the ability you get the entire effect. If you activate the abilities of two animated Chronatog Totems, each will get +3/+3 and you will skip your next two turns. Effects that cause you to skip steps, phases, or turns are cumulative. If two effects that cause you to skip turns are generated, then you will end up skipping two turns.
Q: If you discard Nightshade Assassin, and pay its Madness cost, as part of the Smallpox discard effect, when does the Assassin come into play? Does he come into play during the middle of the Smallpox effect? Or does he wait to come into play until after Smallpox finishes with its effects?
A: The Madness ability will trigger when you discard this Assassin, but it won't go on the stack or resolve until after Smallpox has completely resolved. So there is no way for the Assassin to be in play when you have to sacrifice a creature.
Q: My opponent has three 2/2s on the field. I have a Thallid Germinator and eleven Saproling tokens in play. I choose to attack with the eleven Saproling tokens. My opponent blocks three of my eleven Saproling tokens and I play Strength in Numbers on one of my blocked Saprolings, making it an 12/12 with trample. Can I then sacrifice the two remaining blocked Saproling tokens without weakening the effect of Strength in Numbers on my Saproling and deal twenty damage to my opponent?
A: Yes. Strength in Numbers counts the number of other attacking creatures when it resolves. It does not matter if this number changes after it has resolved, the power and toughness bonuses given to the targeted creature will not change.
Q: Does Coalition Victory require snow lands (which are basic lands) as well as their non-snow counterparts?
A: No. Snow is a supertype, not a subtype. A Snow-Covered Plains has the same land type as a regular Plains. In order to win the game when Coalition Victory resolves, you need lands with one of each basic land type in play; they can be snow lands, but they don't have to be.
Q: My opponent plays Dragonstorm with a Storm count of four, and I Swift Silence it. Does it counter the Storm copies? If it does, how many cards do I draw?
A: Yes, that works, as long as you wait for the Storm triggered ability to resolve first. If you do, then you will draw four cards. If you play Swift Silence too early, and the Storm triggered ability has not resolved yet, then you'll only counter the original spell and draw one card.
Q: I have Gutwrencher Oni in play. I do not control an Ogre and I don't have cards in my hand. Do I have to sacrifice him at the begining of my upkeep?
A: No. The only thing that can happen when this triggered ability resolves is that you will discard a card if you do not control an Ogre. If you cannot discard a card because your hand is empty, nothing will happen.
Q: Can Execute destroy an Angel of Despair (or any multicolor creature that includes white in its color)?
A: Yes, all that matters is that the targeted creature is white. It does not matter if this creature is other colors as well; it can be targeted by Execute, and it will be destroyed when Execute resolves.
Q: I have Transcendence and Rain of Gore in play. What happens if I take damage?
A: Transcendence's ability will trigger and go on the stack. Normally, when this triggered ability resolves, you gain life equal to twice the amount of damage you took. However, due to Rain of Gore, you will actually lose life equal to this amount. This will cause Transcendence's ability to trigger again, and create a loop that will continue unless someone can destroy either of these two permanents or the Transcendence triggered ability is countered. This interaction is kind of odd, as Transcendence's ability is triggering during the resolution of its own ability.
