Chris Richter

Rules Tip of the Day: When instructed to search through a hidden zone, like the library, for a card with a specific quality, you can fail to find a card.

Q: If you Momentary Blink a creature with Echo, like Avalanche Rider, do you still pay the Echo cost at your next upkeep?

A: Yes. When this creature returns to play it is a new and different creature. As you have not controlled it since the beginning of your previous upkeep, its Echo ability will trigger—possibly for a second time—and you will have to pay the Echo cost or sacrifice this creature.

Q: I have a Lim-Dul, the Necromancer in play and my opponent plays one as well to kill mine via the legendary rule, can I use the ability of my Lim-Dul to take control of his Lim-Dul when it goes to the graveyard so that in the end, I will have his Lim-Dul in play under my control?

A: Yes, you can. Your opponent can also pay 1B if he has it available to return your Lim-Dul to play under his control. How this all resolves depends on whose turn it is and who has the most mana available.

Q: I know you can't regenerate in response to Sudden Shock. How about Knight of the Holy Nimbus—can it be regenerated (perhaps because it always has a regeneration shield on)?

A: Yes, it will automatically regenerate unless its activated ability was played earlier in the turn. In fact, because that ability is an activated ability, it can't be activated in response to Sudden Shock. In order for the player who played Sudden Shock to kill the Knight, he needs to telegraph his intentions a bit by playing that ability in order to destroy Knight of the Holy Nimbus.

Q: If my creature is enchanted and I use Momentary Blink on it, will the Aura be removed or will the creature will remain enchanted?

A: The creature will be removed from play and will then return as a new creature without the Aura attached to it. Because this Aura is now in play and not attached to anything, it will go to the graveyard.

Q: I have a Serra Avatar in play, and my opponent has a Adarkar Valkyrie in play. My opponent destroys my Serra Avatar; it touches the graveyard and gets returned to my deck as stated on the card. But my opponent argues that the Adarkar Valkyrie can take control of the Serra Avatar as it touches the graveyard. What actually happens?

A: Actually, Serra Avatar's ability prevents it from going to the graveyard at all. It does not go to your graveyard and then get shuffled into your library, it gets shuffled into your library instead of going to your graveyard, so it does not touch it at all. Because of this, Adarkar Valkyrie's ability will not work at all on Serra Avatar.

Q: If I give all my spells Ripple using Thrumming Stone and then cast a Storm spell, will any Stormed copies of the spell have Ripple too?

A: While these copies of spells will have the Ripple ability, the ability will not trigger. The Ripple ability of spells only triggers when you play the Ripple spell; it does not trigger when a copy of a Ripple spell is put on the stack without being played.

Q: My question involves Hunted Horror and Mind Bend. Once the tokens with protection from black are in play, can I Mind Bend them to have protection from another color, or can their "text" not be targeted at all? Are tokens considered to have text?

A: Yes, these tokens will have text that you can alter with Mind Bend. However, you will only be able to change the text of one of the tokens with a single Mind Bend.

Q: Will Molten Rain deal damage when targeting a snow land?

A: it depends on what you mean. If you are referring to the snow-covered lands that were originally in Ice Age and later in Coldsnap, then no: those lands have the supertypes snow and basic. However, if you are referring to one of the the newer snow lands from Coldsnap, like Scrying Sheets, Mouth of Ronom, or Arctic Flats, then yes. The controller of these lands will be dealt two points of damage, as these lands are non-basic lands.

Q: If a Licid is turned into an Aura targeting Fugitive Druid do you get to draw a card?

A: No. Using the ability of a Licid to turn it into an enchantment is not the same as playing an Aura spell. It may end up attached to the Fugitive Druid, but the Druid was not targeted by an Aura spell, so its ability will not trigger.

Q: I have a Bosium Strip and the top three cards in my graveyard are three Lightning Bolts. After I activate the Strip, can I play all three Lightning Bolts, since they all become the top card of my grave one after another?

A: Yes. Bosium Strips creates a continuous effect that only applies as long as the top card in your graveyard is an instant or sorcery. As long the new top card is an instant or sorcery, then you can play that card.
