Ask the Judge, 11/30/2006
Rules Tip of the Day: You always have a hand, even if it is empty. So you can discard an empty hand, but you cannot discard a card if your hand is empty.
Q: If I have a Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir in play when my Hypergenesis resolves, is it one-sided in my favor?
A: No. When Hypergenesis resolves, players put permanents into play, they do not play them. Teferi, Mage of Zhafir's ability does not affect this at all. Your opponents will be able to put permanents into play when Hypergenesis resolves.
Q: When sacrificing a Grinning Totem to search through an opponent's library, if I choose a card with the Suspend mechanic, can I play the card for it's Suspend ability?
A: No. You can only play the card you searched for. You do not treat this card as though it is in your hand in any other way, so you cannot suspend it.
Q: Can Kaervek the Merciless target and destroy a creature that just triggered Kaervek's ability?
A: No. Kaervek's ability triggers when the creature spell is played. This triggered ability will go on the stack on top of the creature spell and you will choose a target for the ability at that time. The creature spell that triggered the ability will still be on the stack, so this creature cannot be targeted by the ability.
Q: I recently came across what I think to be an old and outdated ruling regarding Tsabo's Web. This ruling said that Tsabo's Web would not keep a land from untapping if it had a Threshold ability unless its controller had Threshold. I thought how Threshold worked changed, is this ruling correct?
A: You are correct. Threshold has changed and that ruling is obsolete. It used to be that permanents with Threshold abilities did not have the Threshold ability text unless their controller had seven or more cards in their graveyard. However, this was changed when Time Spiral was released. Now these permanents always have these abilities, but they are not applied to the game or cannot be activated unless their controller has seven or more cards in their graveyards. So Tsabo's Web will prevent a land with a Threshold ability from untapping, even if its controller does not have seven or more cards in thier graveyard.
Q: I have a Faceless Butcher in play with Sol'kanar the Swamp King under it. My opponent plays Ixidron, which flips all creatures over. What happens to the Sol'kanar?
A: It remains removed from the game. In fact, if this Faceless Butcher leaves play while face-down, Sol'kanar the Swamp King will remain removed from the game. This is because this Butcher will leaves play with no abilities, and therefore its leaves-play ability can not trigger.
Q: If I discard a Dodecapod to a Smallpox, does the Smallpox then proceed to cause me to sacrifice the Dodecapod?
A: Yes. You fulfill each of the actions when you resolve Smallpox one at a time. Because you discard a card first, if your opponent played this Smallpox and you choose to discard Dodecapod, it will be in play when you are instructed to sacrifice a creature.
Q: When using Reiterate with Buyback to copy an instant or sorcery, can more than one copy be created?
A: Yes. When Reiterate resolves, it will be returned to your hand and the original spell you targeted will still be on the stack and can be targeted again.
Q: If I play a Yavimaya Dryad and put a Forest into play under my owner's control, and then I play Scryb Ranger, can I then return that same land to my hand?
A: No. To activate Scryb Ranger's ability you have to return a Forest that you control to it's owner's hand, not a Forest that you own. If your opponent had a Scryb Ranger, he could return the Forest to your hand to activate this ability, but you cannot activate the ability of your Scryb Ranger.
Q: I counter a Storm copy of Dragonstorm with Remand. Even though I'm not countering the original Dragonstorm, will my opponent's Dragonstorm card return to his hand, or does my Remand become a hard counter?
A: The copy, which is not represented by anything, is returned to his hand. When state-based effects are checked this copy will cease to exist. So yes, Remand can function as a "hard counter" when it counters a copy of a spell.
Q: Can you kill a 0/4 wall by using About Face to switch its power and toughness so that it is 4/0? Or does it become 4/1 until end of turn?
A: About Face (or the coming into play ability of Crookclaw Transmuter, for a more recent example) will cause this 0/4 wall to have zero toughness, so it will die. There is nothing that will automatically boost this creature's toughness to one.
