Rules Tip of the Day: When playing in tournaments, remember that it is important to keep track of your life total in a manner that is not easily disrupted, like using pen and paper.
Q: Can you use the mana from Boseiju, Who Shelters All to Suspend a sorcery spell to make it uncounterable when it becomes played?
A: No. You can use this mana to pay a Suspend cost, but you are not playing an instant or sorcery with this mana. The "uncounterable" effect will not stick around until the last Suspend counter is removed and you eventually play this spell.
Q: Ghostflame Sliver's ability reads "All Slivers are colorless." Is Ghostflame Sliver colorless even when it is not in the in-play zone?
A: No. Ghostflame Sliver has a static ability that only functions when it is in play. This is not a characteristic-setting ability like Transguild Courier's, as characteristic-setting abilities only apply to the card that they are on. When not in play, Ghostflame Sliver is a red and black card.
Q: If I play a creature after a Sudden Spoiling was played on me, will the creature I just played become a 0/2?
A: No. The effect from Sudden Spoiling only applies to those creatures that were in play under your control when Sudden Spoiling resolved. Any creature that enters play under your control or that you gain control of will not be affected.
Q: My opponent casts a spell, which I counter with Draining Whelk. My opponent casts a Stifle to counter the Whelk's ability. Does the Stifle counter the Counterspell ability, the "put X counters" ability, or both?
A: Draining Whelk has just one triggered ability. When this ability resolves, the target spell is countered, and the Whelk will get +1/+1 counters equal to the converted mana cost of this spell. If this triggered ability is countered, then none of these things will occur. So the spell your opponent played will resolve, and your Whelk will not get any +1/+1 counters.
Q: I have Vesuvan Shapeshifter in my graveyard and my opponent has a Firemaw Kavu in his. We have no other creatures in play or in graveyards. He plays Living End. I want to copy my friend's Kavu with my Shapeshifter. Is this legal?
A: No. Both of these creatures will come into play at the same time. in order for the Shapeshifter to come into play at a copy of a creature, the original creature must be in play before the Shapeshifter comes into play. Because there are no other creatures in play when this Shapeshifter comes into play it will be a Vesuvan Shapeshifter. It will not have any power or toughness, so it will end up going to the graveyard.
Q: I have Doubling Season in play and I sacrifice a Saproling for Thallid Germinator's ability and target a creature. Then I sacrifice another Saproling to activate Deathspore Thallid's ability targeting an opponent's creature. Will Doubling Season affect the +1/+1 or -1/-1 effects at all, or does it have to specify a "counter" for Doubling Season to apply?
A: Doubling Season does not apply to this effect at all, as no counters are created. You may be sacrificing a token creature, but the effect that is applied to the targeted creature has nothing to do with tokens or counters.
Q: Does Plated Pegasus lower the amount of damage dealt when a Borgardan Hellkite comes into play?
A: No. The damage in this example is being dealt by an ability, not a spell. The ability of Plated Pegasus only affects damage dealt by spells.
Q: With War's Toll, can your opponent only play one spell, or can he tap any of his land for mana to play any number of spells before War's Toll takes effect?
A: He can always respond to War's Toll's triggered ability by tapping all of his lands for mana and "floating" this mana until the end of the current phase. War's Toll does not prevent your opponent from playing more than one spell a turn. It just makes him play all spells in one phase.
Q: Does Mongrel Pack need to be declared as a blocker or an attacker to be considered to be put into a graveyard during combat?
A: No. All that matters is that it goes to the graveyard during a combat phase. If you sacrifice it or destroy it by any means during a combat phase then you will get the token creatures.
