Ask the Judge, 1/4/2007
Rules Tip of the Day: You only lose a game when you are instructed to draw a card from your library and are not able to do so. You do not immediately lose when your library becomes empty.
Q: If you block a creature with an Essence Sliver, and then cast Momentary Blink on it with damage on the stack, do you still gain the life?
A: Yes. When Momentary Blink resolves, the Sliver will leave play and then reenter play. When combat damage is dealt, the game will remember that the source of this damage was a Sliver, so the ability of the Essence Sliver in play will trigger, even though it is a different creature.
Q: I attack with Lim-Dul the Necromancer and my opponent blocks with a 4/4 creature. Lim-Dul and the creature kill each other in combat. Will the ability of Lim-Dul trigger? Can I take the 4/4 creature that killed Lim-Dul in combat?
A: Yes. Lim-Dul's ability is a leaves-play ability and it will trigger when both of these creatures go to the graveyard.
Q: Can one use Clockspinning or Jhoira's Timebug to remove depletion counters from Decree of Silence?
A: You can with Clockspinning, but not with Johira's Timebug. Clockspinning allows you to either add or remove any counter from a permanent with a counter on it. However, Johira's Timebug specifically refers to time counters only, so it cannot affect the depletion counters on Decree of Silence.
Q: I have an Evil Eye (It doesn't matter which) in play and a few Slivers. If I play Conspiracy and choose 'Sliver', does this mean that the Eye will get the Sliver bonuses and my Slivers can attack?
A: Not exactly. Conspiracy changes the creature type of each creature and creature card you own, but it does not affect other text of these permanents and cards. The Eye in play will get the bonuses from the Slivers in play, but its ability will still prevent all non-Eye creatures you control from attacking. This means that none of your creatures will be able to attack. Also, if you choose "Eye" for Conspiracy, none of your creatures will have any of the Sliver abilities.
Q: I played Krovikan Whispers on my opponent's creature, which has a power of 6. Next I play Spawnbroker and choose to trade control of the enchanted creature with a legal target my opponent controls. Do I get his creature and he gets his back with Krovikan Whispers still attached? Does my opponent now control the Krovikan Whispers, or do I?
A: When Spawnbroker's ability resolves, you will lose control of the enchanted creature and the Krovikan Whispers will remain attached to it. You're still the controller of the enchantment; it does not matter that you no longer control the creature. During each of your upkeeps the Cumulative Upkeep ability of Krovikan Whispers will trigger, but as you no longer control this creature, you cannot pay the Cumulative Upkeep cost and apart from you losing some life, nothing will change.
Q: If I play Telling Time and there is only one card left in my library, where does it go? And what about if there are two cards left?
A: If there is only one card in your library then you will draw it. This is because you perform the actions listed in the order written. Telling Time instructs you to draw one first, so if there is only one then you will draw it. If you have two cards in your library then you will draw one and put the other on the top of your library. However, this does not matter, as it is both the top card and the bottom card at this point.
Q: I have a Ragged Veins enchanting an opponent's creature, and a Furnace of Rath in play. If I [[Lightning Axe the creature, will it deal twenty damage to an opponent?
A: No. When Lightning Axe resolves, the amount of damage dealt to the enchanted creature will be doubled from five to ten. When this happens, Ragged Veins will trigger. However, Ragged Veins ability causes the controller of the enchanted player to lose life, this ability does not deal damage. Because of this, Furnace of Rath will not have any effect, and your opponent will only lose ten life.
Q: If I have Vedalken Orrery in play, can I respond to an opponent's spell with Cranial Extraction to remove the played spell from the game before it comes into play?
A: No. When a spell is played, the first thing that happens is that it goes on the stack. Because of the Vedalken Orrery, you can play Cranial Extraction at this time, but when the Extraction resolves the spell on the stack will be unaffected.
Q: With Grave Consequences do both players get to draw a card?
A: No. Both players can remove any number of cards from their graveyards and lose life equal to the cards that remain there, but only the controller of Grave Consequences draws a card.
