Rules Tip of the Day: Auras (local enchantments) are controlled by the player who played the enchantment spell, or by whoever is specified as the controller by the effect that put the Aura into play. In other words, you do not control an Aura, just because it is enchanting a permanent you control.
Q: My opponent has a Stuffy Doll in play (he chose me). When I play Ivory Mask, can he still tap it to deal a point of damage to me?
A: Yes. Stuffy Doll's abilities do not target anything. Even when it comes into play, the controller of Stuffy Doll chooses a player; he does not target one. Once Stuffy Doll is in play and a player has been chosen, that player will receive damage from Stuffy Doll's ability, even if that player is untargetable.
Q: I was playing a Boros mirror match today where I had Opal Guardian out on the field. My opponent played Ronom Unicorn and then sacrificed it in response to Opal Guardian's trigger going on the stack, claiming that Opal Guardian was still an enchantment and that Ronom Unicorn could be sacrificed to kill Opal Guardian. Is this legal?
A: No, it is not. Your opponent was incorrect. Opal Guardian's ability triggers when your opponent plays a creature spell. This triggered ability will go on the stack on top of this creature spell and will resolve first. When it does, Opal Guardian will become a creature before the creature spell resolves and the creature enters play.
Q: I have a Counterbalance on the table and my opponent plays Mind's Desire with four Storm copies. I turn over the top card of my library and reveal an Exalted Angel and the original Mind's Desire gets countered. Can I keep revealing for the storm copies, or does the Counterbalance not trigger for the Storm copies?
A: Counterbalance will not trigger for the Storm copies, as these copies are put on the stack without being played, when the Storm triggered ability resolves. However the spell cards that are removed from the game by the Storm copies of Mind's Desire can be played. Any time your opponent plays one of them, Counterbalance's ability will trigger. So you can reveal the top card of your library in an attempt to counter these spells.
Q: I am wondering, now that there are dual lands back in Extended, how Planar Overlay interacts with them. When Planar Overlay makes a player choose a basic land of each type, does this mean they can count one dual as two different land types? Can Boros Deck Wins count its Sacred Foundry as both a Mountain and a Plains?
A: Yes. When Planar Overlay resolves, a player can choose to return one dual land to his hand and have it count as two different basic land types. The example you gave where a Sacred Foundry is returned as both a Mountain and a Plains is correct.
Q: If my opponent plays Court Hussar, can I play Shadow of Doubt in response to prevent him from looking through his library?
A: No. Shadow of Doubt prevents players from searching their libraries. Court Hussar's ability has you look at the top three cards of your library. This does not count as searching. Because of this, the effect from Shadow of Doubt will not affect Court Hussar at all.
Q: If I sacrifice a creature, then Zombify and kill it again, will Caller of the Claw count it for one or two Bears?
A: Two creatures went to your graveyard that turn; it does not matter that they were both represented by the same card. So Caller of the Claw's ability will put two Bear tokens into play under your control.
Q: In the first turn of a game I play a Forest and Manabond. In my hand are two Tabernacles of Pendrell Vale, two Mishra's Factorys and a Nantuko Monastery. At the end of the turn, can I use Manabond's ability, putting one Tabernacle, the two Mishra's Factories and the Nantuko Monastery into play and discarding the second Tabernacle? Or do I have to play all lands, causing both Tabernacles to go to the graveyard because of the legend rule?
A: When Manabond's ability resolves, if you choose to reveal your hand, you have to put all land cards in your hand into play; you cannot choose to keep some in hand and then discard them. So if you do choose to take advantage of Manabond's ability, you will have to put both Tabernacles into play, and they will go to the graveyard when state-based effects are checked.
Q: I'm playing with Beacon of Destiny and Daru Spiritualist. Does Beacon of Destiny get +0/+2 by using its ability as a result of targeting itself?
A: No, Beacon of Destiny's ability does not target anything. Its ability may redirect all damage from a source of your choice to itself, but because this ability does not target, it will not get the +0/+2 from Daru Spiritualist's triggered ability.
