Rules Tip of the Day: Effects that change the type of a land into a basic land type do not make that land a basic land. Basic is a supertype, and effects that are applied to subtypes will not affect supertypes. This also applies to lands with one or more basic subtypes; they are also not basic lands, unless they have the Basic supertype.
Q: My opponent has a Lotus Bloom Suspended with one counter left on it, and I play Conjurer's Ban on my turn, naming Lotus Bloom. What happens on his turn when he removes the last counter? Is it countered?
A: It won't be countered; your opponent is, however, prohibited from playing it. Because he cannot play the Lotus Bloom, it will remain removed from the game.
Q: I have a Bramble Elemental out, and enchant it with Flickerform. Then I activate Flickerform. When it and the creature come back into play, does the Elemental's ability of putting Saprolings into play activate again?
A: First of all, Bramble Elemental's ability does not activate, it is a triggered ability. But yes, what you describe is basically what will happen. Bramble Elemental's ability triggers any time an Aura becomes attached to it, not just when an Aura is played on it.
Q: What happens to Naturalize or Oblivion Stone when they're used to get rid of Planar Void?
A: The Naturalize will go to its owner's graveyard, but the Oblivion Stone will be removed from the game. The difference is due to the fact that Naturalize is a spell on the stack, while the Stone's effect is from a permanent that was sacrificed as part of the activation cost. When Naturalize resolves, it will destroy Planar Void. Then as the final part of its resolution, it will go to the graveyard. At this point, Planar Void no longer in play, so its ability will not trigger. The situation with Oblivion Stone is different; Oblivion Stone is sacrificed as part of the activation cost of its ability. This means that it will go to the graveyard before its ability resolves and before the Planar Void is destroyed. So Planar Void's ability will trigger when you play this ability and remove the Oblivion Stone from the game before Planar Void and all other nonland permanents without fate counters are destroyed.
Q: Player A uses the second ability of Moratorium Stone, targeting a Grave-Shell Scarab in the graveyard. Player B responds by using the ability of a Grave-Shell Scarab in play to draw a card, and replaces the draw by Dredging the targeted Grave-Shell Scarab in the graveyard. What happens?
A: Moratorium Stone's ability will be countered on resolution, as its single target is no longer legal. Because of this, no part of this ability will resolve, and nothing will happen.
Q: I am wondering if I have to sacrifice a creature to the Gate to Phyrexia at each of my upkeeps, or if I have the option of not sacrificing a creature to the Gate?
A: No, you are not required to make a sacrifice. Gate to Phyrexian has an activated ability, not a triggered ability. Its current Oracle text makes this clearer. You can only use the ability once each turn and during your upkeep step, but you are not required to do so.
Q: I have a Black Lotus and my opponent has another artifact in play. Can I declare Rack and Ruin targeting both artifacts, then pay for it using the Black Lotus?
A: Yes, that works. When you play a spell or ability, you choose targets before you have to generate the mana to pay for the spell. So you can target your Lotus and then sacrifice the same Lotus to get the mana needed to play this spell.
Q: Can I play a Phyrexian Dreadnought and sacrifice creatures to it in an attempt to meet it's requirement, even though I know that I that I can't meet that same requirement? Basically, I'm looking to sac creatures to it after I play Reins of Power on an opponent, and if I can get it out that's fine. But if not, I am trying to sac his creatures to it.
A: Yes. In fact, you must sacrifice creatures in an attempt to meet this requirement. If the Dreadnough were to come into play you must sacrifice creatures you control until you have sacrificed a total of power of 12 or more in order for the Dreadnought to enter play. If you cannot, then the Dreadnought does not come into play. However, your combo with Reins of Power works.
