Chris Richter

Rules Tip of the Day: Unless otherwise specified, you can sacrifice a creature to pay the activation cost of its own ability.

Q: How does Intet, the Dreamer's ability work with cards like Lotus Bloom and Ancestral Visions?

A: As Intet's ability allows you to play the removed card without paying its mana cost, you can play a card that does not have a mana cost. So you can play a Lotus Bloom or Ancestral Visions that has been removed from the game by Intet's ability.

Q: If I have a Calciderm out, and I play a Stormfront Riders, am I able to return the Calciderm to my hand?

A: Yes. Stormfront Riders' ability does not target. You choose two creatures you control to return to their owner's hand when Stormfront Riders' ability resolves. You can choose creatures that cannot be targeted by spells or abilities.

Q: Does Wild Pair's effect happen when any player casts a creature spell?

A: No, Wild Pair's ability only triggers when a creature that was played comes into play under the control of Wild Pair's controller.

Q: Can you pay the Suspend cost of a creature when you could play an instant, if Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir gives it Flash?

A: Yes. You can pay a Suspend cost and Suspend a card anytime that you could play it from your hand, and Flash allows you to play creature cards whenever you could play an instant. These two abilities "combine" to allow you to Suspend a creature card anytime you could play an instant.

Q: If my opponent has a Fungus Sliver, and I have a creature with Fire Whip, can I tap and sacrifice the Fire Whip to kill the Fungus Sliver? Or does the first point of damage give it a counter before my second point can kill it?

A: You can do what you want, but you need to use some stack "trickery." First, you should tap this creature to deal one point of damage to the Fungus Sliver. Then you should pass priority and allow this ability to resolve. When it does, the Sliver will be dealt a point of damage and its ability will go on the stack. Then you should sacrifice the Fire Whip to deal a second point of damage to the Sliver before its triggered ability resolves. When this ability resolves, a second point of damage will be dealt to the Sliver. This will cause its ability to trigger again, but before this second ability can go on the stack, state-based effects will be checked. At this point, the Sliver will go to the graveyard, as it has lethal damage.

Q: If I play Quicken can I Suspend sorceries on my opponent's turn?

A: No, not any longer. Quicken has just received errata, so it now specifically states that you can play a Sorcery card as thought it has Flash. Taking the special action and Suspending a card is not playing that card, so you cannot Suspend a sorcery when you could play an instant.

Q: If I have two Pendelhaven Elders in play, can I use them both at the same time to pump up my 1/1 creatures?

A: You can use them both, but a creature that is 1/1 will only end up being 2/3. The ability of Pendelhaven Elder checks the power and toughness of creatures you control when the ability resolves. When the first ability resolves, 1/1 creatures you control will get +1/+2. When the second ability resolves, these creatures will now be 2/3s, so this ability will not affect them.

Q: With Confusion in the Ranks and Treachery, do I get to steal an enchantment and still retain control over the creature?

A: No. You will gain control of an enchantment controlled by another player, but you will lose control of the Treachery. Whoever controls the Treachery will have control of the creature that Treachery enchants.

Q: I have a Manabond among my permanents, and a vast amount of land in my hand—five basic lands, three Izzet Boilerworks, and a Scorched Ruins. I currently have no lands among my permanents, and it is the end of my turn. I decide to use Manabond's ability. First I put the five basic lands into play, then the Scorched Ruins, sending two of the basics to the graveyard. Then the three Izzet Boilerworks, each sending one of the basics back to my hand. Am I now allowed to put the remaining three basic lands into play again, or do I have to discard them with the rest of my hand?

A: This cannot happen as described. When Manabond's ability resolves, you can choose to reveal all lands in your hand and put them in play at one time—they do not come into platy one at a time. However, Scorched Ruins has a replacement effect that is applied as it comes into play. In other words, you have to sacrifice two untapped lands in order for it to come into play. As all of these lands are coming into play at the same time and you control no lands at this point, this Scorched Ruins will go to your graveyard.

If you do put the Izzet Boilderworks into play when Manabond's ability resolves, then its triggered ability will go on the stack after Manabond's ability has fully resolved. This means that the land that you end up returning to your hand will remain in your hand.
