Rules Tip of the Day: Know your state-based effects—If two or more permanents with the World supertype are in play, the one that was in play longer will go to the graveyard. (When quizzing knowledgeable players and judges about what the state-based effects are, this is always the one they forget, or at least remember last.)

Q: How exactly does the triggered ability work on Spellweaver Volute? Let's say Spellweaver Volute is enchanting a Rewind in my opponent's graveyard. I play a sorcery card, and it goes on the stack. That triggers Spellweaver Volute and that goes on the stack. With the Spellweaver Volute trigger on the stack, my opponent activates Dralnu, Lich Lord, targeting the enchanted Rewind. He plays the Rewind, countering my sorcery. What happens to the Spellweaver Volute trigger? Is it countered? Assuming it is, does that mean Spellweaver Volute falls off and doesn't get to enchant another graveyard card?

A: The Spellweaver Volute triggered ability is not countered in this example, it will still resolve, but this ability will not do anything when it resolves, as the Volute is not enchanting anything when the trigger resolves. This also means that the Volute will not be attached to another instant. The Volute "fell off" immediately after the Rewind was played, went to its owner's graveyard, and it will stay there.

Q: With Pact of Negation, If you have an effect in play that skips your upkeep step, such as Eon Hub, do I lose the game? Or just the ability does not trigger?

A: If the next upkeep step is skipped, then the delayed trigger created by Negation Pact will wait until your next actual upkeep that takes place. As long as the Eon Hub remain in play, you will not have to deal with this ability. But if Eon Hub leaves play, this ability will go on the stack at the beginning of your next upkeep step.

Q: If I play Hunting Wilds without Kicker, putting two Forest cards into play, and then later in the same turn I play Hunting Wilds with Kicker, does it affect the first two lands put into play, or just the two put into play by the currently played spell?

A: Just the two lands that were put into play by this second Hunting Wilds will become creatures. The portion of Hunting Wilds' effect that refers to "all Forests put into play this way" means only those Forests that have been put into play by this particular resolving Hunting Wilds, not any Forests put into play by another Hunting Wilds.

Q: I have a Volrath's Shapeshifter in play and my opponent casts a Lightning Bolt targeting it. In response I pay 2 to discard Chronozoa, then, with no time counters on it, the Shapeshifter / Chronozoa goes to the graveyard and the 'Zoa ability activates. What is the nature of the tokens that it creates? Are they just like normal Chronozoa tokens but with the added ability of the Shapeshifter,?

A: These copies will be copies of Volrath's Shapeshifter, not copies of Chronozoa. After the Lightning Bolt resolves, state-based effects are checked and this Shapeshifter / Chronozoa will go to the graveyard. This will cause the leaves-play ability of this object to trigger. When this triggered ability resolves, two copies of that permanent as it left play will enter play. These copies will have the 'Shifting' ability of the Volrath's Shapeshifter, so they will enter play as copies of whatever the top card in your graveyard is. Assuming that nothing else has occurred, then Volrath's Shapeshifter is the top card of your graveyard, so these token copies will enter play as Shapeshifters.

Q: My opponent plays a Persecute, targeting me. I unmorph a Willbender and change the target to him, can he then play a Commandeer to change the target of his Persecute back to me?

A: Yes. It does not matter that he is already the controller of this spell, when Commandeer resolves, he can change the target of this Persecute. Changing control of an object it like adding a layer of paint, the most recent coat of paint "wins." In this example another control layer is being applied to this spell. The fact that the spell does not change controllers does not prevent the other effect of Commandeer from being applied.

Q: I used the Kaldra equiment to create a token Kaldra. It's equipped with everything, and I attack my opponent. He plays Sudden Spoiling. What happens now? Sure the Equipment will remain indestructible. But will Kaldra be a non-indesructable 5/7 creature without any of his other abilities? Or will the indestructible effect for the token remain?

A: This equipped token creature will be a 5/7 creature, be indestructible, and any creature that is dealt damage by it will be removed from the game. It will be indestructible as that is due to an effect from the Shield of Kaldra. Any creature that is dealt damage by this creature will be removed from the game as that is from a triggered ability of the Sword of Kaldra. The +5/+5 from the Sword of Kaldra will also be applied after the power and toughness setting effect from the Sudden Spoiling. The overall net effect is that Sudden Spoiling will remove the First Strike, Trample, and Haste abilities (granted by Helm of Kaldra) and make its 'base' power and toughness 0/2.

Q: A friend and I have had a healthy debate over the interaction between Voidslime and Collective Restraint. Simply put, can Voidslime counter Collective Restraint's cost during the attack phase?

A: No. Collective Restraint has a static ability that creates combat restriction. Paying the cost associated with this ability does not use the stack and cannot be countered. It is not a triggered or activated ability, so Voidslime can't counter it.

Q: Can I use the abilities of Coretapper and Power Conduit to add counters to Armageddon Clock so it deals more damage?

A: No. Armageddon Clock uses doom counters, not charge counters. You can put charge counters on the Armageddon Clock, but they will not affect Armageddon's abilities in any way.
