Rules Tip of the Day: Know your state-based effects—State-based effects are checked whenever a player would receive priority. This happens at the beginning of most steps and phases, after any spell or ability has been played, and after any spell or ability resolves.
Q: I cast Shah of Naar Isle on my turn. Then, on the following turn, can I cast Plagiarize in response to my opponent determining the number of cards they will draw from the Shah's Echo, such that I get their draw?
A: The ability that allows your opponent's to draw three cards is a triggered ability that uses the stack. You can play Plagiarize in response to this. However, the Shah's triggered ability allows your opponent's to draw up to three cards, and this choice is made when the ability resolves. When the triggered ability resolves, your opponent can choose to draw zero cards. If they do, then the replacement effect made by Plagiarize will have nothing to replace, and you will not draw any cards.
Q: My opponent plays Gifts Ungiven, and I respond by playing the new Aven Mindcensor. I am pretty sure he will Gifts for the top four cards of his library, but what happens if he reveals two cards with the same name?
A: Your opponent can only search for and reveal cards from the top four cards of his library if they all have different names. If there are two with the same name, then he will only be able to choose one of them to reveal, so he might end up revealing three cards. Keep in mind that you will be able to choose two of the searched-for cards, and the remainder will go to their owner's graveyard. So if fever than four cards are found, then this player will put fewer than two cards in his hand.
Q: Is there any way to tap someone's land on their turn before they can pay the cost associated with one of the new Pacts from Future Sight? For example, can I use Gigadrowse during their untap step?
A: That does not work. No one gains priority in the untap step of a turn, so what you want to do does not work. And even if players did get priority in that step, your opponent could respond to each Gigadrowse copy by tapping his lands for mana. Mana burn does not happen until the end of a phase, so he could float this mana to his upkeep step.
Q: Considering that Futures Sight has enchantments and Auras that tap, does this mean you can tap these enchantments with a Tangle Wire?
A: No. Tangle Wire's ability specifically states that you must tap a artifact, creature, or land for each fade counter on it. The fact that there are now enchantments with abilities that cause them to tap does not change this. Enchantments could always tap; there was never a rule preventing this. All that has changed is that some enchantments now have inherent abilities that cause them to become tapped.
Q: Can I cast Null Profusion on my opponent, reducing his handsize and making him skip his draw step?
A: No. Null Profusion does not target anyone. It comes into play under the control of the person who played it, and affects that player only.
Q: Does Evil Eye of Urborg's ability destroy the blocking creature before damage is assigned or after?
A: That ability triggers in the declaration of blockers step. It will go on the stack and resolve before the combat damage step, so the blocking creature will not deal any combat damage.
Q: There is a Weathered Bodyguard in play with a Sandskin attached to it. I deal eight trample damage from an unblocked creature, which goes to the Weathered Bodyguard. Is all damage prevented or just five, because the other three would trample over?
A: Trample damage only applies when assigning combat damage. It does not "trample over" under any other circumstances. In this example, all eight points of damage is assigned to the defending player, but the Weathered Bodyguard's ability will cause this damage to be dealt to the Bodyguards instead. The Trample ability does not affect this in any way, so all eight points of damage will be redirected to the Bodyguards and then prevented by Sandskin's ability.
Q: If I'm playing against someone who has Mishra, Artificer Prodigy out and I counter an artifact spell they play, do they still get to search for another one with the same name?
A: Yes. Mishra's ability triggers when Mishra's controller plays an artifact spell. Whether or not this artifact spell resolves does not matter. A spell is played when it is announced, put on the stack, the necessary choices are made, and it is paid for. Even if this spell is countered, it was still played.
Q: I play Master Warcraft during my turn, then I play Relentless Assault. Would I choose the blockers and attackers for both combat phases?
A: Yes. The effect from Master Warcrat applies to all combat phases that turn, not just the first.
