Rules Tip of the Day: When a copy of a spell with a value of X in the mana cost is created, the copy will have the same value of X as the original.
Q: If I use Mirari to make a copy of Arc Blade, what happens when the copy resolves? All of my instincts tell me that something which is not a card cannot become Suspended. Is this correct?
A: In the end, this copy will not remain removed from the game with time counters on it, but it can and will become Suspended for a brief time. Technically speaking, as it resolves, it is removed from the game, gets three time counters, and becomes Suspended. Then, after this copy resolves, state-based effects are checked and it will cease to exist. So you won't have a Suspended copy for long.
Q: If I play Bitter Ordeal with a Gravestorm count of five and copy it with Mirari, how many copies of Bitter Ordeal will I have? I'd have six from the original Bitter Ordeal; would I also have six from the Mirari copy?
A: No. Mirari's ability puts a copy of the the spell that triggered its on the stack, this copy is not played. Gravestorm, like Storm, only triggers when a spell is played. This ability does not trigger when a copy of a Gravestorm spell is put on the stack. So you'll only have a total of seven copies.
Q: Can Arcanum Wings cheat on protection and restrictions like Wurmweaver Coil? I.e., can I enchant a nongreen creature with Arcanum Wings and swap it with Wurmweaver Coil? Can I enchant a creature with Protection from white and swap with Pacifism and the like?
A: No, that does not work. When resolving the Aura Swap ability, you can only return Arcanum Wings to your hand and attach a different Aura to this creature if it can be legally attached to it. If you can not legally perform this swap, nothing happens. Auras can only be attached to permanents that are listed after the Enchant keyword ability in the text box of the Aura. So you cannot attach Wurmweaver Coil to a non-green creature at any time. Similarly, you cannot attach a white Aura to a creature that has protection from white.
Q: One of my Magic friends loves pulling Hex out of her hat to destroy my creatures. Can Rebuff the Wicked be used to counter it, or is this only legal if the Hex would target only one of my creatures?
A: Rebuff the Wicked can target and counter any spell that targets one or more creatures you control. You can counter Hex with Rebuff the Wicked if any targeted creature is one you control.
Q: I have a Web of Inertia and a Withered Wretch in play. My opponent has a creature out and no graveyard to pay the Web's effect. If he plays a Predatory Strike, can he remove it from the game for the Web's effect before my Withered Wretch removes it from the game?
A: No. Web of Inertia has a triggered ability that triggers and resolves at the beginning of combat step. Your opponent cannot remove a card in his graveyard from the game until this triggered ability resolves. However, before this ability resolves, you will gain priority, so you can use Withered Wretch's ability to remove any and all cards from it.
Q: If I control Measure of Wickedness and I activate Rakdos Augermage's ability (both players have cards in hand), does my opponent gain control of Measure of Wickedness? My understanding is that the game sees both discards as happening at the same time, and my opponent gets Measure of Wickedness. However, a friend of mine thinks that the ability of Measure of Wickedness for me will trigger, he will gain control (in the middle of the Augermage's activation, somehow), and then he will discard, giving me back the Measure of Wickedness. Who is correct?
A: You are. Measure of Wickedness' ability will only trigger once when Rakdos Augermage's ability resolves. You both discard at the same time, but obviously only one player can control the Measure of Wickedness, so the ability can only trigger once.
Q: I'm having a hard time understanding the "half your life, rounded up" on many cards—in particular, Shahrazad. If my opponent loses a Shahrazad subgame and was at 19 life in the main game, would he lose half of his life (9.5) rounded up (to 10) thereby going to 9 or would his life total be rounded up from the 9.5 to 10 life total? In other words, is it possible to kill with Shahrazad?
A: The phrase "half your life, rounded up," refers to the amount of life lose and not your ending life total. In the example given your opponent will lose 10 life and have a life total of nine. It is possible to cause someone to lose the game with Shahrazad as long as they have a life total of one when the subgame begins.
Q: My question is about the difference between All Hallow's Eve as a sorcery instead of an enchantment. If the card indeed stays in play, can I use a card such as Dust of Moments to add two time counters to it and use it again?
A: As part of the effort to restore cards to a closer approximation of their original text, All Hallows Eve is a sorcery again. In the past year the rules have been altered so that abilities can trigger on a card that has been removed from the game. This was done in order to make Haunt and Suspend work. All Hallow's Eve also received errata so that it removes itself from the game and it loses a counter at the beginning of each of your upkeeps. Other than that change and the fact that these counters are not scream counters, the card works as printed. To get to your actual question, no you cannot use Dust of Moments to add or subtract counters from All Hallow's Eve, as Dust of Moments can only add or subtract time counters and only from a Suspended card or one that is in play.
