Rules Tip of the Day: When changing the target of a spell or ability, you must choose a new legal target.
Q: Does Pact of the Titan work with Wild Pair?
A: No, Wild Pair's ability triggers when a creature comes into play and you played it from your hand as a creature spell. Pact of the Titan puts a creature token into play; this creature was not a creature spell. Because of this, Wild Pair's ability will not trigger when this token comes into play.
Q: I played Force of Savagery and put a +1/+1 counter on it via Graft. Will it live?
A: No, Graft is a triggered ability that uses the stack. After Force of Savagry enters play, state-based effects are checked and Force of Savagery will go to the graveyard before it can get a +1/+1 counter.
Q: I have a Pyromancer's Swath in play. If I play a Fireball with X=0 and pay four additional mana for 4 additional targets, will it be an expensive Pyroclasm, or a waste of mana?
A: It will be a waste of mana. Pyromancer's Swath only affects a spell or ability you control that would actually deal damage. Fireball, in this example, is not dealing any damage, so Pyromancer's Swath will not be applied at all.
Q: Can I use the mana from a Temple Garden to pay for Imperiosaur?
A: No, that does not work. Dual lands have more than one basic land type, but they are not basic lands, because they do not have the Basic supertype. To play Imperiosaur, you can only use mana from lands named Forest, Plains, Island, Swamp or Mountain and their snow-covered equivalents.
Q: If my opponent plays a Body Double, can I Mortify or Putrefy it while the copy ability is on the stack?
A: No. Nhat is not a triggered ability, and it does not use the stack. That ability creates a replacement effect that is applied as Body Double enters play.
Q: Can a player cast Conflagrate targeting my Gossamer Phantasm for 0, a 2/1 for 1, and a 2/2 for 2? If they do, will the Phantasm die because of its triggered ability?
A: No. When you play a spell or ability where you divide an effect among multiple targets, each targeted object must receive at least one of what is being divided. In order to target the Gossamer Phantasm with Conflagrate, it must have at least one point of damage assigned to it.
Q: I was wondering if I could use Flowstone Channeler's ability to discard Reckless Wurm, playing the Wurm for its Madness cost, and then targeting it, giving it haste and +1/-1 until end of turn. Is this legal?
A: No. You choose the target of Flowstone Channeler's ability when you play it. This will happen before you discard a card to pay the activation cost and well before you could play that discard via Madness.
Q: I have an Adarkar Valkyrie in play along with a face-down creature. If I kill the face-down creature, and I target it with the Valkyrie's ability, will it return to play face-up or face-down?
A: It will return to play face up. The creature that is returned to play will not have any connection to the creature that was previously and initially targeted by the Valkyrie's ability, so this creature will not be affected by the Morph effect. It will be face up.
Q: Do I have to have a Forest in play to Splice Roar of Jukai onto an Arcane spell?
A: No. The reference to you controlling a Forest is not a restriction on when the cards can be played or spliced onto another spell. It only applies when the spell would resolve. So you can splice it at any time. However, if you do not control a Forest when the spell resolves, blocking creatures will not receive +2/+2.
Q: My opponent cast Flash and put Protean Hulk into play. Can I Swords to Plowshare the Protean Hulk before it gets sacrificed via Flash?
A: No. When Flash resolves, the chosen creature is put into play and then it will go to the graveyard if its mana cost minus two is not paid. No player will receive priority at this time to play any spells and abilities (though the controller of Flash will have an opportunity to play mana abilities).
