Ask the Judge, 5/23/2007
Rules Tip of the Day: Permanents with protection from a quality cannot have enchantments, equipment, or fortifications (new, as of Future Sight) attached to them that if they have that quality.
Q: My opponent has an Aven Mindcensor in play. If I sacrifice my Terramorphic Expanse to search for a land, I realize I can only search the top four cards of my library, but can I play my Panglacial Wurm even though he did not appear in the top four cards?
A: No, you can only play a Panglacial Wurm if it is in the searched for portion of your deck. With Aven Mindcensor in play, you are still searching through your deck, but you can only deal with the four cards that you are allowed to look at. You may know that there is a Panglacial Wurm in your deck, but it is 'hidden,' so it cannot affect the game.
Q: If I have a Gathan Raiders in play and the only card in my hand is a Fatal Frenzy, do the Raiders get +3/+0 or +5/+0 if I play the Frenzy on them?
A: They will get +5/+0. The bonus that is applied to this creature is determined when Fatal Frenzy resolves. When you play a spell, it leaves your hand (or whichever zone the card was in) and goes on the stack. The Gathan Raiders will become a 5/5 creature at this point, as it's Hellbent ability is a static ability that does not use the stack. When Fatal Frenzy resolves, your hand will be empty, so the Gathan will get an additional +5/+0.
Q: If you return a spell to its owner's hand with Venser, Shaper Savant, does it counter the spell?
A: Not really. The spell is not on the stack, so it cannot resolve. You get a very similar result, but technically speaking, it has not been countered.
Q: If I have Pyromancer's Swath in play, do I discard my hand at end of turn no matter what, or only if its other ability actually does something?
A: The ability that causes you to discard your hand is a separate ability that has no connection to the first. It will trigger at the end of any turn as long as it is in play. So you discard your hand at the end of any turn, regardless of whether or not a sorcery or instant spell you control has had the amount of damage it deals increased by Pyromancer's Swath's static ability.
Q: I sacrifice my three creatures in play to Flashback Dread Return, targeting Flame-Kin Zealot in my graveyard. In response, my opponent Extirpates, targeting my Bridge from Below in response. Do the triggers go on the stack before Extirpate resolves, resulting in me getting my three 2/2 Zombies?
A: No, you will not get any Zombies. Bridge from Below's triggered abilities have the "intervening if" clause. In order for the ability to trigger, this additional condition must be true. When the ability goes to resolve, this condition must be true then as well. If it is not, the ability will do nothing. When you played Dread Return, you sacrificed three creatures, causing the ability of Bridge from Below to trigger three times. These triggers went on the stack on top of Dread Return. Then your opponent played Extirpate. As it has Split Second, no other spells or non-mana abilities could be played. When Extirpate resolves, the Bridge from Below in the graveyard, and all others found in any of the searched zones, will be removed from the game. Then Extirpate will go to the graveyard. When the Bridge from Below abilities on the stack attempt to resolve, the Bridge from Below is no longer in your graveyard, so these abilities will do nothing.
Q: Regarding Enslave, does being the controller also make you the owner?
A: No. The owner of a card is the person whose deck the card started in. Control of cards can change over the course of the game, but ownership does not. When you gain control of a creature with Enslave you will become its controller, but the owner will end up receiving damage from Enslave's ability.
Q: I've cast Delay on my opponent's Cancel. Two turns later, they cast a spell I want to keep from resolving. If I play Fury Charm targeting their Suspended Cancel, removing the last time counter from it, will it counter their spell, assuming it's the only other spell on the stack when the Cancel is played?
A: Yes, that works. When a Suspended card loses its last time counter, it must be played if possible. If this Suspended Cancel were to un-Suspend in the upkeep step, then there would not typically be anything on the stack for it to target. But as you are causing it to lose its last counter while there is a spell on the stack, it will have to be played targeting this spell.
Q: If I have two Sengir Autocrats in play and one is destroyed, does he remove all Serf tokens or just the tokens he created with his comes-into-play ability?
A: All Serf tokens will be removed from the game. Sengir Autocrat's leaves-play triggered ability does not refer to the Serf tokens that it put into play; it specifies all Serf tokens, so all of them will leave the game. This includes any controlled by other players as well.
Q: If I have Celestial Dawn in play, does that make my Ornithopter a white creature or a white artifact creature?
A: It makes it a white artifact creature. "Artifact "is not a color, it is a permanent type. Celestial Dawn does not affect permanent types at all.
