Ask the Judge, 6/13/2007
Rules Tip of the Day: You can normally only play a land during a main phase of your turn, when the stack is empty. If you give Dryad Arbor Flash, then you can play it any time during your turn, bun not in an opponent's turn.
Q: My opponent has Yixlid Jailer in play. I play a Body Double, choosing to copy an Akroma, Angel of Wrath. Does the Body Double have Akroma's abilities, or does it not have them, because the card that it is copying doesn't have them, because of the Jailer?
A: The Body Double will be a 'full' copy of Akroma with all of Akroma's abilities. The copyable characteristics of an object are determined before you apply the effect of something like Yixlid Jailer. So the Akroma in the graveyard will not have any abilities, but the one in play will have more than enough.
Q: My opponent has Sinew Sliver and Mistiform Ultimus in play. I use my Boldwyr Intimidator to make the Ultimus a Coward; does it lose the Sliver creature type and, therefore, the Sliver bonus?
A: Yes. Boldwyr Intimidator's ability removes all creature types from the targeted creature and makes it either a Coward or a Warrior only.
Q: If I use Morality Shift to exchange my graveyard and library, will the Narcomoebas in my deck come into play? Does "exchanging" count as "putting"?
A: Yes, it does. The word "exchange" is a short and simple way to describe what happens when Morality Shift resolves. As any Narcomoebas in your library do end up in your graveyard, their abilities will trigger, and they will end up in play. This also applies to Gaea's Blessing's triggered ability.
Q: With Gibbering Descent in play, what happens if the owner of Gibbering Descent casts Slaughter Pact and the Gibbering Descent player has Hellbent at the beginning of his turn?
A: If you skip your upkeep step, then the delayed triggered ability created by a resolving Pact will not trigger or resolve. This trigger will wait around until you do have an upkeep step. So if Gibbering Descent leaves play, or you have a card in hand at the beginning of your upkeep step, you will end up having to pay mana or lose the game.
Q: I have Greater Good in play, along with Teneb, the Harvester, and a Loxodon Hierarch. Am I able to attack with Teneb and the Hierarch, and when damage goes on the stack, sacrifice the Hierarch to Greater Good, discard a creature, then use Teneb's ability to return the discarded creature to play?
A: Yes, as long as you make sure that you activate and resolve Greater Good's ability when combat damage goes on the stack and before it resolves. Teneb's ability triggers when damage is dealt, and you choose a target for this ability when it goes on the stack. The creature you target must be in a graveyard at this time.
Q: I cast Rewind on my opponent's spell. If my opponent has no response to Rewind, I do not have an opportunity to put a storage counter on my Dreadship Reef, do I?
A: You are correct. In order to add a counter to your Reef and untap it, you must do so before your Rewind resolves. In order to make sure that this happens, you must add this counter before you pass priority back to your opponent.
Q: I have a Furnace of Rath under my control, and my opponent attacks with a Grizzly Bears. I have no creatures in play, but I cast a Boros Fury-Shield targeting this creature, spending red mana on its mana cost, and then I cast Brute Force targeting the same creature. Am I correct to think that the Bear will get +3/+3 until end of turn, making it a 5/5, and then Boros Fury-Shield will prevent the ten damage (five, doubled by Furnace of Rath), and will deal twenty damage to its controller?
A: No, that will not work. Boros Fury-Shield does prevent all combat damage that this creature would deal, but it deals damage to its controller when Boros Fury-Shield resolves. The amount of damage is based on the power of the creature and not necessarily the amount of damage that would be dealt. Assuming that the Boros Fury-Shield resolves after the Giant Growth does, it will deal a total of ten points of damage to your opponent. Then, when combat damage resolves, no damage will be dealt.
Q: If you play a Siege-Gang Commander, can you put the three Goblin tokens into play under your opponent's control?
A: No, you can only put a permanent into play under the control of another player if the effect that creates these permanents specifically says so. Siege-Gang Commander's ability instructs you to put these token creatures into play, and as it does not specify under whose control, it means under your control.
Q: I am qualified for Nationals on the 27th of July. Will 10th Edition (release date July 14th) be legal at that time, or will Standard be the same as it is now (i.e. 9th Edition still being legal)?
A: Tenth Edition will be legal in all constructed formats on July 20th. At that time, 9th Edition will rotate out. So yes, it will be legal to use in the Standard portion of your Nationals event.
