Rules Tip of the Day: Once attached to a permanent, an Aura (once called a 'local enchantment') does not target. This means that making this enchanted permanent untargetable will not cause the enchantment to fall off and go to the graveyard.

Q: I have Braids, Conjurer Adept in play and Krosan Cloudscraper in my hand. Using Braids, can I put the Krosan Cloudscraper into play either face-up or face-down due to the fact that it has Morph?

A: You can only put it into play face-up. In order for the Cloudscraper to enter play face-down, you would have had to play it as a face-down spell. The Morph effect is not applied if the Cloudscraper is put into play without being played.

Q: I have a Magus of the Abyss in play, and my opponent has a Stampeding Wildebeests, which is her only creature. When her upkeep begins, she has two abilities triggering: Magus's "destroy creature of her choice" and "return green creature to her hand". She claims she can return the creature, and not suffer Magus's ability. Is this true?

A: No. When multiple abilities trigger at the same time they go on the stack in APNAP (Active Player, Non-Active Player) order. This means that those controlled by the active player go on the stack in whatever order she wants, followed by those controlled by the non-active player in whatever order he wants.

Then these triggered abilities will resolve in LIFO (Last In, First Out) order. In other words, the last item added to the stack will resolve first. This means that the ability of your Magus of the Abyss will cause this creature to become destroyed before it can be returned to its owner's hand.

Q: If my opponent plays a Pact of Negation, am I required to remind him to pay it during his next upkeep? I notice it does not say "You may pay 3UU", so as I understand it, he is required to pay the cost if he is capable. So, if I do not remind him, and he does not pay the cost, would I receive any kind of penalty such as a warning or higher? Or will he simply lose the game and that is the end of it?

A: You are under no obligation to point out that your opponent has a Pact delayed triggered ability that is about to resolve. While it is very sporting to remind your opponent that he must pay or lose, you are not required to in any way. Also, your opponent is only forced to pay the cost if he has that mana in his mana pool. He is not forced to tap his lands for mana or generate mana in any way. If your opponent forgets about the trigger and fails to pay it, you have an obligation to point out his mistake, since he has made an illegal play, but you do not need to do this until it is obvious (based on him taking actions that occur later in the game, like drawing for his turn) that he has forgotten to resolve the trigger. At this point he should not, under the current rules, be allowed to retroactively pay for the trigger, and he should lose the game.

Q: My opponent plays a Lightning Axe targeting one of my creatures, and discards a Fiery Temper with it. is it possible for me to play Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir in response so that the Fiery Temper cannot be played?

A: Yes. When your opponent plays Lightning Axe and discards the Fiery Temper, the Madness triggered ability of the Fiery Temper will go on the stack on top of the Lightning Axe. Before either of these resolves, you will be given priority. You can play Teferi at this time, and provided he is in play when the Madness triggered ability resolves, then your opponent will not be able to play his discarded Fiery Temper.

Q: I have Mirari in play on my opponents turn. He plays a spell, which I counter. He, in response, counters back. Can I copy my original counterspell with Mirari to counter for a second time?

A: Yes, but only if the Mirari triggered ability has not resolved yet. Mirari has a triggered ability, not an activated one. You'll only get to make a copy of your Counterspell when that triggered ability resolves. If your opponent was smart, he'd wait for the Mirari triggered ability to resolve before he played his Counterspell and you choose to not make a copy. however if he played his Counterspell before the Mirari trigger resolves, you can then pay two mana to make another Counterspell and target his original spell.

Q: I have Rain of Gore in play and my opponent has 15 life. He plays Beacon of Immortality, targeting himself. Is that life gain, meaning that Rain of Gore will trigger, or does that bypass my enchantment somehow?

A: Doubling your life total does count as gaining life. As your opponent does control this Beacon and it is causing his life total to go up, Rain of Gore's replacement effect will replace this with loss of life instead. Also, just to clarify: Rain of Gore has a static ability that generates a replacement effect; it does not have a triggered ability.

Q: Are the effects of Aluren cumulative? For example, if I have two copies in play, can I play creatures of mana cost six or less for free?

A: No. Applying the effect from a second Aluren does not do anything more than having just one in play.

Q: Player A has Root Maze in play. Player B plays a City of Brass and it comes into play tapped from Root Maze. Will Player B take damage from City of Brass?

A: No, this City of Brass did not become tapped; it came into play tapped. Because it did not go from an untapped to tapped state, its ability will not trigger.

Q: Can I Mind Bend a creature with protection from blue, since Mind Bend targets the text and not the creature itself?

A: Mind Bend targets the permanent, not the text of that permanent. You cannot target a permanent with protection from blue with Mind Bend.
