Rules Tip of the Day: A single spell or ability can only target a single permanent or player once for each use of the word target in a card's text. There are some spells or abilities, like Cone of Flame, that use the word 'target' multiple times, but also specify that each target must be different. With these spells and abilities, you cannot target the same player or object more than once, even though they do use the word 'target' more than once.
Q: What happens when I have multiple copies of Sword of the Meek in my graveyard and a 1/1 creature comes into play? Will both Swords come into play and attach themselves to the 1/1 creature? Does the second Sword care if the creature is no longer a 1/1 when its triggered ability tries to resolve?
A: In this example, both Swords of the Meek will be returned to play and attach to this creature. Sword of the Meek's trigger condition is that you have a 1/1 creature come into play. Once this condition is met and the ability triggers, each Sword card in your graveyard will return to play and attach itself to this creature. It does not matter what the power and toughness of this creature is when these triggers resolve.
Q: What happens when two Pyromancer's Swath are in play and Grapeshot is resolved. For example, with a Storm count of four, Grapeshot is played, dealing five damage normally, or when one Swath is in play, 15 damage. Would two Swaths mean that each enchantment triggers separately, which would mean 25 damage?
A: Yes. The effect from each Pyromancer's Swath is applied individually any time an instant or sorcery you control would deal damage. (This is not due to a triggered ability. Pyromancer's Swath has a static ability that generates a replacement effect.) Normally, each time an individual Grapeshot copy resolves, it deals one point of damage. A single Pyromancer's Swath will increase this amount of damage to three, and an additional Pyromancer's Swath will increase that to five. In this example, you would deal a grand total of 25 points of damage.
Q: I have two copies of Wild Pair in play and a Serra Sphinx. I play Radiant, Archangel. Can I now search my library for two Serra Angels and put them directly into play?
A: You will only be able to search for one Serra Angel. Wild Pair's ability checks the current power and toughness of the creature that came into play as the trigger resolves. In this example, your Radiant will enter play as a 4/4 creature. When the first Wild Pair ability resolves, you will be able to search for a creature with a combined P/T of eight. So you can search for a Serra Angel when this trigger resolves. However if you do, then the P/T of Radiant will become 5/5. When the second Wild Pair ability resolves, you will be able to look for a creature with a combined power and toughness of ten, so you will not be able to look for a second Serra Angel.
Q: My opponent plays a creature while I have Grave Peril in play. My opponent allows me to sacrifice Grave Peril. Can my opponent then Momentary Blink the creature before Grave Peril destroys it? In other words, does the "destroy that creature" part resolve as soon as you "sacrifice Grave Peril," or do they occur separately?
A: When Grave Peril's triggered ability resolves, you will sacrifice Grave Peril and destroy the creature that came into play and triggered its ability. This all happens during the resolution of Grave Peril's ability, and no one can play spells and abilities between these two actions. The only time your opponent would have the opportunity to play Momentary Blink is before Grave Peril's triggered ability resolves. However, if he does, then when this creature re-enters play, Grave Peril's ability will just trigger again and end up destroying it anyway.
Q: What happens to a Suspended spell when the last counter is removed, if I have been targeted by Orim's Chant with Kicker during my upkeep? I assume that it is in effect 'countered" and the spell goes to the graveyard. Correct?
A: No. As you cannot play any spells, this card will remain where it is in the removed from the game zone; it will not go to your graveyard.
Q: I have a Helium Squirter in play with one +1/+1 counter remaining on it. Can I play Thrive to add another +1/+1 to it and reload its counter count to two moveable +1/+1 counters?
A: Yes. All counters with same name are interchangeable. Helium Squirter's Graft ability can use any +1/+1 counter on the Squirter, regardless of how the +1/+1 counters got there.
Q: If you have an Archane Teachings attached to a Horseshoe Crab, would something need protection from blue, from red, or from either one in order to not be targetable?
A: Arcane Teachings give the ability to deal damage to the enchanted creature. So a creature that has protection from blue would not be able to be targeted by this ability. Creatures with protection from red can be targeted by this ability and receive damage from it.
Q: My opponent has Goblin King out and now all my opponent's little 2/2 Goblins are now 3/3. When I play Pyroclasm, what will happen? My opponent says just the Goblin King will go to the graveyard and when he dies, the other Goblins all go back to being 2/2s. Is this right?
A: Sort of. They do go back to being 2/2s, but they'll be 2/2s with two points of damage on them, so they'll go to the graveyard. Any time state-based effects are checked and one or more is applied, state-based effects are immediately checked again. In this example, state-based effects will be checked and the Goblin King will go to the graveyard. Then state-based effects will immediately be checked again and all of these formerly pumped Goblins will follow their King to the graveyard.
