Chris Richter

Rules Tip of the Day: The first time that a player receives priority in a turn is in the upkeep step.

Q: I have The Rack in play. Can I redirect the damage from my opponent to a planeswalker they control?

A: Yes that works. You can choose to have the damage to a player from any source you control dealt to that player's planeswalker instead. This includes damage that would be dealt by a source's triggered abilities.

Q: If I have Gaddock Teeg in play, can my opponent play Devastating Dreams, or does Gaddock Teeg prevent it?

A: Devastating Dreams does not have an X in its mana cost; it has an X in is text. Gaddock Teeg's ability only prevents non-creature spells with an X in their mana cost from being played. Because of this, Gaddok Teeg's ability will not prevent a player from playing Devastating Dreams.

Q: Can you Extirpate a card like Purity?

A: Yes. Purity, like each other Elemental Incarnations from Lorwyn, does go to its owner's graveyard. When it does, its ability will trigger and go on the stack. You can respond to this triggered ability with something like Extirpate and remove the card from the game before it is shuffled back into its owner's library.

Q: If an opponent plays a Tribal instant with Changeling, like Crib Swap, can I play a Vedalken Aethermage to return it from the stack to their hand?

A: No. When a spell or ability refers to a subtype without also using the words 'card', 'source', or 'spell', it means a permanent in play with that subtype.

Q: How do I determine my maximum hand size if my opponent has a Cursed Rack and a Gnat Miser in play? Does timestamp order matter?

A: Yes, timestamp does matter. You apply these two effects in the order that they are generated, which means the order that they each came into play. If the Cursed Rack came into play first, your maximum hand size would be three. If the Gnat Miser came into play first, your maximum hand size would be four. In this second example, the ability of the Gnat Miser is effectively negated.

Q: I have a Warrior en-Kor and a Lymph Sliver in play. I redirect three damage from my Warrior to the Sliver. Does the Sliver Absorb all the damage, because it is redirected one at a time, or does it die a horrible death because the damage didn't come directly from the source?

A: Damage that is redirected by an en-Kor ability is not redirected one point at a time. If three points of damage from a single source is begin dealt at one time, and all three points are redirected to a Lymph Sliver, then all three points will be dealt at once. The Lymph Sliver's ability will then be applied and will prevent just one point of damage. So the Sliver will survive, but only because it took two points of damage.

Q: With Bottled Cloister and Paradox Haze in play, will I get to draw an extra card at each upkeep? Or only the first?

A: Bottled Cloister's upkeep triggered ability will trigger once at the beginning of each of your upkeep steps. This means that you will draw an additional two cards a turn. It does not matter that no cards will be returned to your hand when this ability resolves the second time, you will still draw a card.

Q: My opponent plays Enduring Ideal; can I Stifle Enduring Ideal in my opponent's upkeep when it goes on the stack again? Will Enduring Ideal spell be on the stack again once my turn is over?

A: Yes, you can choose to counter the Epic triggered ability that is put on the stack each turn. If you do, then your opponent will not be able to play a copy that turn. Countering the delayed triggered ability made by the Epic ability once will not counter all subsequent instances when it triggers. Your opponent will get to play copies of Enduring Ideal in future turns.

Q: May I look at the six initial cards I remove from the game with Demonic Consultation? Can my opponents look at them too?

A: Yes, those cards are removed from the game; the effect does not specify that the are removed from the game face down. Because of this, all players in the game can see these six cards that are removed.

Q: I was wondering if Legacy Weapon can remove Darksteel Colossus from the game?

A: Yes, it can. Darksteel Colossus cannot be destroyed, but effects that remove something from the game do not destroy them.

Q: When an effect allows me to search an opponent's library for cards, like Extirpate, am I allowed to have a careful look at all the cards in the library? Can I take time for reading texts of unnamed cards? Or do I have to search the card titles and remove the named cards as fast as I can?

A: You can look at all of the cards that are there, but you cannot take as much time as you want. In a sanctioned event, you are still required to play at a decent pace. Taking too much time has the potential to get you a slow play warning.
