Ask the Judge, 11/14/2007
Rules Tip of the Day: When playing a Command spell from Lorwyn, you must choose two different modes. You cannot choose the same mode more than once.
Q: I have Ajani Goldmane in play, and use his ability to make a token. On the next turn, my opponent gains control of the token. Will the token have power and toughness equal to his life total, or to mine?
A: The power/toughness of the token made by Ajani's third ability is set by a characteristic-defining ability of the token itself. It will change as its controller's life total changes. This ability refers to the controller of the token, so it will change, when your opponent gains control of it, to having power and toughness equal to your opponent's life total.
Q: My opponent resolves Thoughtweft Trio. I respond to its comes-into-play trigger with Vedalken Shackles. Who will choose to remove a Kithkin from the game or sacrifice the Trio?
A: Your opponent will, as he is the controller of the Trio's comes-into-play ability. This is because he controlled the Trio when it came into play. It does not matter that he does not control the Trio as the Champion ability resolves. Keep in mind that while he can choose to not remove a Kithkin he controls from the game, he will not be able to sacrifice the Trio, as he does not control it.
Q: I have two Blind-Spot Giants in play. Can they attack and block, or does their special rule only work if there is a Giant other than a Blind-Spot Giant in play?
A: Each Blind-Spot Giant will 'see' the other and be able to attack and block. When the text of a a card refers to itself by name, it means ~this card~, not all cards with that name.
Q: I have a creature that was equipped with Deathrender and then enchanted with Lignify. Would I still be able to put a creature card from my hand into play if this creature goes to the graveyard?
A: Yes, as that is an ability of Deathrender and not one that is given to this enchanted and equipped creature. This ability is not affected by the fact that Lignify removes all abilities from the enchanted creature.
Q: Can Bloodline Shaman put Tribal spells into my hand if they have the right creature type?
A: No. Bloodline Shaman's text specifically states that you put this card into your hand only if it is a creature card with the chosen type. The introduction of the Tribal card type does not change how this works.
Q: Can lands be played with the activated ability of a Mosswort Bridge?
A: Yes, but only if the activated ability of the Hideaway land resolves during your turn and you have not yet played a land that turn.
Q: I was wondering, since non-combat damage that targets me can be redirected to my planeswalker, if healing that targets me (from, for instance, Primal Command) can be redirected to my planeswalker to pump up his loyalty counters more quickly.
A: No. Spells that cause you to gain life will not cause a Planeswalker you control to gain loyalty counters. While the loyalty counters on a Planeswalker card function in a somewhat similar way to your life total, they are not completely analogous.
Q: If I play a Gemstone Mine, can I remove three counters in one turn, or can I only remove one counter each turn for mana?
A: You only remove one counter and add one mana each time you activate Gemstone Mine's ability. It is possible to do this all in one turn, but you'd have to find a way to untap Gemstone Mine between activations.
Q: Can I play Venser, Shaper Savant to return Enduring Ideal to my opponent's hand at the beginning of his turn?
A: Yes, this works. You can choose to return a copy of a spell on the stack to its owner's hand with Venser's comes-into-play ability. This will, obviously, prevent it from resolving. The copy will then cease to exist when state-based effects are checked after Venser's ability resolves.
Q: My opponent has Adarkar Valkyrie in play. I have Claws of Gix and a number of creatures in play. It is my turn, and I sacrifice one of my creatures using Claws of Gix to gain one life. Can my opponent respond by targeting the sacrificed creature so that it comes to play under his control?
A: No. You sacrifice a creature when you activate Claws of Gix's ability. After you activate this ability, the sacrificed creature will not be in play, and your opponent will not be able to target it.
Q: When an opponent makes me discard Guerrilla Tactics its ability triggers. Do I have to pay Guerrilla Tactics' mana cost to play this ability, or does the ability triggering make it so that I don't have to pay?
A: When a spell or ability controlled by an opponent causes you discard Guerilla Tactics, its ability will trigger. Putting this ability on the stack is not the same thing as playing Guerilla Tactics, so you will not have to pay anything.
