Ask the Judge 12/11/2007
Rules Tip of the Day: You cannot allow your opponent to perform an illegal action. Doing so is cheating.
Q: If I control Garruk Wildspeaker and I play Cloudthresher, can I redirect the damage to Garruk to remove two counters?
A: No. Damage from a source you control can be redirected from an opponent to a planeswalker that that player controls. You cannot choose to redirect damage that would be dealt to you by a source you control to a planeswalker you control.
Q: If you play Doubling Cube's activated ability in combination with Rings of Brighthearth, do you get triple or quadruple the amount of mana in your mana pool?
A: Neither. Doubling Cube's ability is a mana ability; Rings of Brighthearth's ability will not trigger when you play it.
Q: Regarding Hunter of Eyeblights' activated ability: does it care about the kind of counter on a creature? Must it be the counter from the Elf's comes-into-play ability?
A: Hunter of Eyeblights' ability can target creatures with any kind of counter on them; it is not limited to only targeting creatures with +1/+1 counters or to just the one creature that was targeted by its comes-into-play ability. Also, only planeswalkers have loyalty counters, and they are not normally creatures, so you cannot generally target one with the Hunter's ability.
Q: Does Sarcomite Myr count as a blue card? Can it be destroyed/countered by Red Elemental Blast or removed from the game to cast Force of Will?
A: Yes, it has blue mana in its mana cost, so it is a blue card, and a blue permanent when in play. It can be targeted by Red Elemental Blast and discarded to pay the alternate play cost of Force of Will.
Q: If Flaring Pain was cast this turn, would the damage-dealing effect of Boros Fury-Shield still work?
A: Yes. The Fury-Shield may not be able to prevent any damage, but it will still be able to deal damage equal to the power of the targeted attacking or blocking creature's power to its controller.
Q: I have three Beacon of Destruction cards and two other cards in my library, and Thrumming Stone in play. Can I continue to play all the Beacon of Destruction cards repeatedly if I play a Beacon of Destruction from my hand?
A: No. The Ripple ability of a spell triggers when you play it. In this situation, when you play a Beacon from your hand, the Ripple ability will trigger. It is when this trigger resolves that you can play revealed cards with the same name as the played spell. If you do play these cards, the Ripple ability that they have will then each trigger. In this example, all four copies of Beacon of Destruction will end up being on the stack at the same time. All the Ripple triggers will resolve before any of the Beacons do. Then, as each one resolves, it will be shuffled into your library. This combo can start up again as long as you end up drawing a Beacon and playing it, but it is not a repeatable loop if you play just that first one.
Q: When Vision Charm is played, am I able to change a Snow Island into a Basic Land - Plains, preventing my opponent from paying costs that require Snow mana?
A: No. Snow is a supertype, not a type or subtype. Effects that change the subtype of a land will not affect supertypes at all.
Q: I used a Soul Sculptor's ability to turn my friend's Juggernaut into an enchantment. I then played Aven Cloudchaser in an attempt to destroy the Juggernaut. What happens? Is the Juggernaut destroyed, or does it revert back to normal?
A: What you have described does not work quite as you have described. The Juggernaut will stop being an enchantment and immediately turn back into a creature, as soon as you play a creature spell. This means that it will not be a legal target for the Aven's comes-into-play ability. However, you can get the result you want if you play the Aven Cloudchaser spell first, and then, before it resolves and comes into play, turn your opponent's Juggernaut into an enchantment.
Q: I have a question about Transmogrifying Licid, when it becomes an Aura, will it lose its Artifact type, or will it be an artifact creature enchantment?
A: Because the effect that makes Transmogrifying Licid does not specifically state that it keeps some or all of its previous types, the Licid will not be an artifact when it becomes an Aura enchantment.
Q: In an unsanctioned event, if I already have four copies of a card in my deck, am I allowed to Wish or play the Research half of Research / Development for more copies of that card, or does this violate the four-copies-per-deck rule?
A: Yes, the 'four-of' rule in the Comprehensive Rules only applies to your deck. You can use a Wish or the Research side of Research // Development to get copies of cards, even if you already have four of them in your deck.
