Ask the Judge 1/3/2008
Rules Tip of the Day: Effects like those generated by cards like Lace with Moonglove or Fistful of Force that last until the end of a turn will never carry over into the next turn. These effects end during the cleanup step of a turn, which is after the end of turn step. If, for some reason, one of these effects is created after the cleanup step has started, then the cleanup step will repeat. Once again, effects like these that use the phrase "until end of turn" or "this turn" cannot carry over into another turn.
Q: Can you explain the interaction of Austere Command with Timber Protector and other Treefolk? If the order is chosen correctly, can you destroy the protector and then the small Treefolk?
A: There is no order to choose. When resolving a spell, you follow the instructions in the order written. With the Command spells from Lorwyn, you apply the effects as they are written on the card. You choose two modes when the spell is played, and when it resolves, these two instructions are followed in the order that that they appear. If the controller of Austere Command chooses to destroy all creatures with a converted mana cost of three or less and those with a converted mana cost of four or greater, then those with a converted mana cost of three or less will be destroyed first. Timber Protector has a converted mana cost of five. This means that if the above modes are chosen, when Austere Command resolves, Timber Protector will be the only Treefolk you control that is destroyed.
Q: Can the cycle of cards from Time Spiral that do not have mana costs—Ancestral Vision, Lotus Bloom, etc.—be played if they have been removed from the game by Clofenor's Plans?
A: No. Clofenor's Plans allows you to play these cards from the removed from game zone; it does not change any of the other things involved with playing these cards. They still have no mana cost and you cannot pay non-existent costs. In order to play them, you need to use an effect that allows you to play them without paying their mana costs.
Q: There is a Favor the Mighty in play and the highest converted-mana-cost creature is a Hill Giant. I play a Sudden Spoiling on the Hill Giant's controller. Will the Hill Giant become a 0/2 with protection from all colors, or a 0/2 with no protection?
A: It will become a 0/2 creature without any protection abilities. The timestamp of Favor the Mighty is set when it comes into play. Sudden Spoiling will have a later timestamp, as it resolved after Favor the Mighty came into play. When calculating the characteristics of this Hill Giant, you will give it protection from all colors first, and then remove all abilities from it.
Q: If I use Boomerang to bounce Eyes of the Wisent from play, does my opponent still get his token creature?
A: Yes, as long as this Boomerang is played during your opponent's turn. This is because Eyes of the Wisent's ability triggers when a spell is played, not when one resolves. In fact, as the Eyes of the Wisent's ability will trigger when the Boomerang is played, the triggered ability will go on the stack on top of the Boomerang, and your opponent will get the token creature before the Boomerang resolves.
Q: If you use Stronghold Overseer's ability at the start of the attack phase to give creatures with Shadow +1/+0 until end of turn and creatures without shadow -1/-0 until end of turn, and then use Dauthi Trapper's ability to give a creature Shadow after playing this effect, would it get +1/+0 or -1/-0?
A: It will still have -1/-0 applied to it. Stronghold Overseer's ability checks the game state and creates an effect based on the current game state when it resolves. This effect will not change, even if creatures in play gain or lose Shadow.
Q: What happen if I have a True Believer in play and cast Volcano Hellion? Will I receive damage?
A: Yes. Volcano Hellion's comes-into-play triggered ability targets a creature in play, but it does not target you. You will receive damage from this ability even if you cannot be targeted.
Q: A creature enchanted with Contaminated Bond blocks one of my two attackers. If I use Balduvian Warlord's ability to change the blocking, does Contaminated Bond's "lose 3 life" ability trigger twice?
A: Contaminated Bond's ability will trigger a second time when the Warlord's ability resolves and the enchanted creature is removed from combat and then blocks again.
Q: I control an opponent's creature with Dominating Licid and a Vedalken Mastermind. Is there a way to return this creature card to my opponent's hand and keep the Licid in play as a creature?
A: No, you can either return this creature to your opponent's hand or you can change the Licid back into a creature, but not both. If the Licid ability resolves first, then the Mastermind's ability will be countered on resolution as you no longer control this creature. If the Mastermind's ability resolves first the Licid will go to the graveyard, as it will be illegally in play as the permanent it was enchanting is no longer in play.
Q: Is there any way of gaining control of an indestructible creature with Debt of Loyalty?
A: No. Creatures that are indestructible cannot be destroyed, so therefore they cannot regenerate.
