Chris Richter

Rules Tip of the Day: When a land has its type changed into a basic land type, it will lose all of its text and gain the text of the appropriate mana ability. It will retain any supertypes it has, like Legendary, Basic, or Snow.

Q: If I use Makeshift Mannequin to bring Akroma, Angel of Wrath back to play, would it have a mannequin counter on it, even though Akroma has protection from black when in play?

A: Yes. When Makeshift Mannequin revolves, it puts the targeted creature into play with a mannequin counter on it. This is all part of the effect of returning it to play. A protection ability will not affect this in any way.

Q: My opponent has an Oona Prowler in play and I want to reduce its power by using its discard ability to give it -2/0. I am holding a Guerrilla Tactics in hand. If I discard Guerrilla Tactics, will it deal four` damage to a player or creature?

A: No. Guerilla Tactic's ability only triggers when you discard it due to an effect controlled by an opponent. When you discard a card to lower Oona's Prowler's power, you are discarding to pay a cost, and you are the controller of this ability.

Q: Can I use Chisei, Heart of the Ocean for removing counters from Suspended cards?

A: No. Chisei's upkeep triggered ability only allows you to remove counters from permanents you control. Objects can only be permanents when in play. Suspended cards are removed from the game, and are therefore not permanents. This is true even if it is a card that will enter play as a permanent when it resolves.

Q: If I remove a +1/+1 counter from Arcbound Reclaimer with Power Conduit, would it activate the Reclaimer's ability?

A: No. In order to activate Arcbound Recalimer's ability, you specifically need to remove a counter to pay the activation cost of that ability. Removing a counter from it in any other way will not cause this ability to activate.

Q: I have Eryao, Soratami Ascendant in play, and three spells have been played this turn. My opponent plays the forth spell—a Shock—targeting me, and then another Shock, targeting Erayo, as the fifth spell. Will Erayo die or flip?

A: Provided that your opponent plays the second Shock as soon as he can without passing priority, then Erayo will end up receiving lethal damage and go to the graveyard. When your opponent plays the fourth spell (the first Shock), Erayo's ability will trigger. This trigger will go on the stack on top of this Shock. At this point, your opponent will still have priority, and he can play the additional Shock now. Assuming nothing else is played, then this topmost Shock will resolve and deal lethal damage to Erayo before it flips. (In tournament play it is assumed that you pass priority after playing a spell unless you specifically state you are not passing. On MTGO, you need to hold control to keep priority after playing a spell.)

Q: I sacrifice False Prophet when I play Recurring Nightmare's ability; will the creature I return to play be removed from the game?

A: No. You sacrifice a creature when you play Recurring Nightmare's ability. Any abilities that trigger on this action will go on the stack on top of Recurring Nightmare's ability and will resolve before Recurring Nightmare does. You do not return the targeted creature card from your graveyard to play until this ability resolves, so that creature will not be in play yet.

Q: I have a Panoptic Mirror with Pulse of the Tangle imprinted on it. During my next upkeep I copy the Pulse and play it for no mana. My oppenent has more creatures than I do. Do I end up with the token equivalent of the card in my hand? If not, why not?

A: The copy of Pulse of the Tangle is returned to your hand. However, as it is not an actual card, it will cease to exist.

Q: If I have Cabal Coffers, ten Swamps, and Infernal Darkness in play, will the Cabal Coffers only produce one mana?

A: Yes. Cabal Coffers' mana ability will only be able to generate one black mana because of the effect from Infernal Darkness. As it costs two mana to activate this ability, you will end up losing mana.

Q: If I cast Summoner's Egg and Donate it to my opponent, and the Egg goes to the graveyard and puts the Imprinted creature into play, will Brand give me control of the creature?

A: Yes, you are still the owner of this card. It does not matter that your opponent is the one who played the spell and had the permanent come into play under his control.
